“Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds” Hebrews 10:24

The hearts of many people are heavy today, Sunday, August 21th after hearing of the passing of the cheery, bubbly, loving Kathy Shade Saturday night.  Kathy, the wife of Harvey Shade, of Eads and will long be remembered as the proud mother, of Brandon and Audrey and her joy when she talked about her grandchildren.  Kathy was an employee of the Kiowa HealthMart and is especially remembered for her vibrant singing in choirs and groups.  Kathy has been afflicted by cancer and was cared for by her husband and the ladies from the Hospice in Lamar.

Cardon Berry won two trophies at the Old Colorado City-Good Times Car Show this past week-end.  Over 400 collectible cars were entered in the “Show.”  Cardon won the Neil Quatkemeyer Memorial Trophy and the Award of Excellence in the Custom Car Division.  He won these with his turquoise 1956 Chevrolet.

Jack Dixon is confined to his recliner or an uncomfortable wheelchair since he had a bad confrontation with a cow.  This is a most inconvenient time for this farmer-rancher who needs to be outside with his animals even if it is with that long purple cast; but HoneyBelle says, “No!”

Eads was blessed last week with small four showers the fell during the night and on Wednesday two times during the afternoon.  It was surprising to come out of the Plains Theatre at 6:15 p.m. and it had rained again!  The CLCEC—Crow Luther Cultural Events Center, group met to firm up plans for the annual “Fair Dance” on Maine Street.  This will be on September 10th in front of the Plains Theatre.  Early this year CLCEC contracted with the Gary West Band out of Nashville, Tennessee.  Terry Riley and Betsy Barnett stated that he and his promotional staff are cordial and highly regarded by other entertainers they have spoken to.  Besides this band, we are looking forward to hearing local entertainers: Jamie Crockett, Rhett Uhland, Jared Weeks, and Brittany Gonzalez.

Charlie and Mary Vasquez reported that the turkey legs sold out so fast in July that they will prepare more for the Fair besides their other foods.  Raelynn Riley has arranged for two men to bring the Mechanical Bull to the Fair and the competition will continue on Maine Street Saturday night.  There will be free movies in the Theatre, lots of visiting, dancing, and relaxing is anticipated after the gates open at 4:00 p.m. for $7.00 and $5.00.

Marty Miller says his father, Bob Miller; down in Apache Junction, Arizona, is doing well after having a mild stroke and getting a new heart pacer.  He and his wife, Donna, have looked forward to having their son, Frank, and Marci Miller of Eads and their son, Brian and Amy and their twin girls and baby boy of Denver come to visit them.  What a joy that will be for them.

The Kit Carson Melodrama group will perform their show, “How the West was worn” on Wednesday, September 7th of the County Fair in the Eads Plains Theatre.  The two shows will be at 5:00 pm and 8:00pm.    According to their Director, Gina DeBono DeChant, the admission is $5.00.

Loretta Seibel of Eads was in Newton, Kansas, this month to attend her granddaughter, Jessica Buck’s wedding reception.  Jessica and Jason Martin were married on a ship in Galveston, Texas, and they went on a cruise on another ship.  Jessica is the daughter of the late Elvin Buck and Lola Seibel Conner.  While Loretta was there, Jessica’s Uncle Jim Buck showed her a family book that he had compiled.  She especially liked seeing photos of the late Buck sisters, Ruth Buck Wissel and Ruby Buck Wissel.  The Buck families had a Buck Reunion in Pueblo August 6th.

Last Wednesday there was a bit of alarmed excitement on the north blocks of Eads when people had to be evacuated because of a broken gas line.  The Las Animas dispatcher told people they could return home in late morning.  Each time we drive north toward Kit Carson, we marvel to see the progress at the future Love’s station site.  The new Subway sign and directional signs are erected as well as a lot of asphalt and cement has been laid.

Meanwhile finishing work inside the Eads Consumer’s Supply store work is progressing.  How nice it is that Hunter Uhland who obtained his degree in electrical skills from Goodland Community College can apply those abilities in the construction of the new co-op station.  Hunter is also an Air Force veteran.

It is hard to believe that when readers may be reading this “About Town News” that the County Fair is only 11 days away.  There is much for some exhibitors to do.  It would really help Karen Jones, the Extension secretary, if all exhibitors young and older will get their entry forms into the office by Tuesday afternoon, September 6th.  You can get copies of these at the court house, the post offices, some stores, or the Premium Book.

Lola Igou has been gone about three or more weeks on trips.  She and the children of her daughter, Ronda, flew to Dallas, Oregon, to visit her and Dr. John Hadley.  Ronda’s son, Hunter and Lexi Uhland young son accompanied her.  His sister, Ashlynn, and four children came from Oklahoma to be with the whole family.  When they returned to Denver, they went to Kremmling, CO to an elaborate mountain wedding of Lola’s sister’s daughter.  They were married at the groom’s grandparent’s ranch.

Many county residents are enjoying the wonderful Palisade peaches sold to them by the School FBLA chapter or the Prairie Queen 4-H Club.

We praise God for having four small rain showers last week.  We are grateful for the moisture.  It really helps the crops and plants as well as prairies.  It is beginning to feel cooler, like fall.   Janet McKnight predicts that it might be right chilly during the fair.

Another new feature of the fair is that on Sunday there will be lots of activities for the youth and for adults.  Remember years ago when we had “greased pig catch-it contests”?

Well, Raelynn Riley has rounded up three different sized pigs for the youth.  And they can keep the pig!

I speak and write for other fortunate people who can take advantage of riding the County Transit Van for doctor appointments…we do thank the Commissioners and tax payers for making this available.  Krissy Ray in the Commissioner’s office will take the phone calls for appointments, makes arrangements, and works with the Transit Committee.  They met last Friday, so we thank those committee members who give of their time also.

The good ladies of the United Methodist Church are distributing the nice community calendars about town to those who purchased them.  What a nice service for the county

families.  Their Pastor Christine and Nancy Walker represented their church for the Weisbrod Chapel last Sunday where the Pastor Chris shared new lights to the Bible story about Jesus and the woman He healed on the was to the Temple.

The Trinity Lutheran LWML hosted over a 100 youths and adults for a back-to-school Ice Cream Social last Friday night in Kit Carson.  They gave the ten new teachers and support staff thermal mugs with candy treats.  Afterwards there was the annual movie at the school.  Saturday evening Charles and Kelly Oswald and family hosted their annual community out door picnic supper with entertainment by the Rodeo Road Apple Band.  What a neat sight to see people sitting on benches mounted on hay bales, kids running about and youths having good times dancing.  Charles and Kelly have this party in the former Kelly-Wilson Lumber Yard lot next to Kelly’s Antiques, Collectibles, and Quilting Shop.
