Bear Bryant, Alabama Coach: “I make my practices real hard because if a player is a quitter, I want him to quit in practice, not in a game.”

This was a warm sunny week-end with some of our Eads students playing EHS high school football, volleyball, softball and golf with the Lamar teams and league football for younger children.  The Eads cheerleaders looked pretty at the football game.  The cheerleaders are Kelly Ramos, Madison Kelley, Molly Stolzenberger, Reagen Johnson, Duff Jensen, Morgyn Johnson, and Hallie Morlan.  This week fans can see high school volleyball at 5:00 p.m. with Eads and Kim here and at 7:00 p.m., the Branson-Kim will take to the field at 7:00 p.m. against Eads.  Next week is Homecoming Week with the Pep Rally at the Football field on Thursday –at 6:30 p.m. after the Middle School games.   Both Middle School games begin at 4:00 p.m.  The Volleyball coaches are: Janelle Crow, Ty Lin Williams and the football coaches are: Trey Eder, Brian Bohlander, and Joe Wagner at the high school level.

Sheri (Weber) and Marcos Mendez are happy to have given birth to a baby daughter last week to be a playmate to their little boy.  The young couple lives near Greeley.

Russell and Dorothy Simmons of Elkhart, Kansas, had been in Eads to do some chores for his mother, Ellen, and had stopped on the way home to watch a football game in Oklahoma when they had a phone call that their home was on fire.  When they returned home there were three fire trucks and people mopping up.  Their kitchen is destroyed from an electrical fire and there was much smoke damage.

Many “teacher” friends, family, and friends gathered at the Triple T Star Restaurant in Granada last week for the baby shower of Dan and Tara (Spady) DeForest.  It was one of the nicest showers I have ever attended with a light lunch, games, pretty favors, and table settings.  It is true that showers whether for a wedding or a baby, are just so much more cordial when the groom or father is a part of the festivities.  The whole party was around the theme of owls.  Did you know this year it is the fashion for baby clothes to have owls in the design?  Her Mother, Aunts, and cousin made quilts, clothes, and centerpieces using the owl motif.  There was an abundance of thick owl cookies frosted in bright colors.  Another nice part of the party was that both sets of the couple’s parents sat at the table with them as they opened their gifts.  Lovely!

Gail Voss served as the lay preacher Sunday at the Haswell and the Eads United Methodist Churches.  In the afternoon, she led the chapel service at Weisbrod ECU.  Two former Haswell residents, Emma Briggs and Virginia Mitchell, were so pleased so see her and hear their hometown younger friend, Gail.   Gail’s message was excellent based on the account of Jesus walking on the Emmaus Road with two disciples.  Nancy Walker played the piano for the singing and it was good to have Nurse Jodi Stolzenberger to sing with us when she had time and C.N.A. Marlynn Eikenberg, also of Haswell, working with the residents.

Last Wednesday evening, the Plains Theatre had a Fathom feature which was the film “Snowden” that was followed by a live interview with the producer and actor and actress.  Edward Snowden who lives somewhere in Russia in exile also was interviewed.   I encourage people to take time to attend this movie next week-end. Sept. 29, 30th or Oct. 1st to be more informed on what has happened in our government and what could happen.  It shows that when people live by principles and their conscience, sometimes, one has to make sacrifices that can make dramatic changes in their jobs, marriages, or careers for the sake of other people.  I recommend adults and teens to save their $5.00 to attend this movie.

Another huge “Thank you” needs to go to Bonnie Morgan and her husband, Rick, who over several months worked to communicate with potential entries in the “The Dusty Plains Car Show”.  This effort brought 52 vehicles to the parade and show and our town. They were assisted on Saturday by Cierra McCracken and Larry and Carla Gifford of the Colorado Christian Bikers on Saturday of the Fair.

After Tim Weeks worked the admission table at the volleyball games last Friday, he took off early to drive a LCC, Lamar Community College, ball team to Adams State College to play in a tournament.  Last week, he drove them to a college tournament in Odessa, Texas.

Our dear childhood family friend, Jenness Klieboeker Richardson, is residing in the Lemay Health and Rehab Center in Fort Collins now.  Jenness has been afflicted with ALS, Lou Gehrig Disease for over a year.  Jenness graduate from Kit Carson High and spent her career by working for U.S.A. Embassies around the world and the US.
