Area Students Awarded Scholarships from Fort Hays University

Local students, listed below by hometown, have been awarded scholarships from Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kan., for the 2016 to 2017 academic year.

Some students on this list have been previously announced, but the scholarships in this list are in addition to or are a higher-value replacement for an earlier scholarship.

Fort Hays State is one of six public universities in the Kansas Board of Regents system.

Recipients are listed with their scholarships, their graduating high schools, parents or guardians and intended majors, when a major has been declared. A few students did not disclose their parents' names or high schools.

Cheyenne Wells (80810): 

Shaelyn Akers, a 2014 Cheyenne Wells High School graduate and a Colby Community College transfer student, accepted a $1,000 Transfer Student Award. Akers, daughter of Tracy and Crystal Akers, Cheyenne Wells, plans to major in agricultural business.

Austin Noe, a 2016 Cheyenne Wells High School graduate, accepted a $2,000 University Scholar Award and a $900 Academic Opportunity Award in applied technology. Noe, son of Jake and Stacy Noe, Cheyenne Wells, plans to major in applied technology.

Jelica Unruh, a 2016 Cheyenne Wells High School graduate, accepted a $500 Academic Opportunity Award from the College of Business and Entrepreneurship. Unruh, daughter of Jacob Unruh, Cheyenne Wells, plans to major in business.

Eads (81036): 

Dylan Dixon, a 2016 Eads High School graduate, accepted a $1,500 Hays City Scholar Award and a $900 Academic Opportunity Award in communication studies. Dixon, son of Michael and Shannon Dixon, Eads, plans to major in communication.

Flagler (80815): 

Hailey Allison, a 2016 Flagler High School graduate, accepted a $1,000 Traditions Scholar Award. Allison, daughter of Jeremy and Leslie Allison, Flagler, plans a career in dentistry.

Holly (81047): 

Brendon Crum, a 2016 Holly High School graduate, accepted a $500 Academic Opportunity Award in agriculture. Crum, son of Dean and Courtney Crum, Holly, plans to major in agriculture.

Holyoke (80734): 

Josilyn Lutze, a 2016 Holyoke High School graduate , accepted a $1,500 Hays City Scholar Award and a $900 Academic Opportunity Award in agriculture. Lutze, daughter of Mark and Mendi Lutze, Holyoke, plans to major in agriculture.

Taylor Mayden, a 2016 Holyoke High School graduate, accepted a $500 Academic Opportunity Award in agriculture. Mayden, son of Schad and Melissa Mayden, Holyoke, plans to major in agriculture.

Iliff (80736): 

Kyle Etl, a 2016 Caliche High School graduate, accepted a $500 Academic Opportunity Award in agriculture. Etl, son of Greg and Debbie Etl, Iliff, plans to major in agriculture.

Julesburg (80737): 

Alana Temple, a 2016 Julesburg High School graduate, accepted a $1,500 Hays City Scholar Award. Temple, daughter of Will and Donna Temple, Julesburg, plans to major in nursing.

Kit Carson (80825): 

Brittanie Newman, a 2016 Eads High School graduate, accepted a $1,500 Hays City Scholar Award. Newman, daughter of Craig and Cynthia Newman, Kit Carson, plans to major in health and human performance.

Lamar (81052): 

Kaleb Crum, a 2016 Lamar High School graduate, accepted a $1,500 Hays City Scholar Award and a $500 Academic Opportunity Award in history. Crum, son of Clinton and Alicia Crum, Lamar, plans to major in history.

Jacqueline Parker, a 2016 McClave High School graduate, accepted a $1,000 Traditions Scholar Award. Parker is the daughter of Mike and Jonna Parker, Lamar, Colo.

Jacob Rogers, a 2016 Lamar High School graduate, accepted a $1,500 Hays City Scholar Award and a $500 Academic Opportunity Award in biology. Rogers, son of Jameson and JoDell Rogers, Lamar, plans to major in biology.

Las Animas (81054): 

Shelby Davis, a 2016 McClave High School graduate, accepted a $2,000 University Scholar Award, a $1,500 FHSU Achievement Award and a $500 Academic Opportunity Award in communication sciences and disorders. Davis, daughter of Stace and Kendra Davis, Las Animas, plans to major in communication sciences and disorders.

Limon (80828): Jacob Randolph, a 2015 Limon High School graduate and a Mesa University transfer student, accepted a $1,500 FHSU Transfer Student Award. Randolph, son of Nick and Donna Randolph, Limon, plans to major in history.

Veronica Younger, a 2016 Limon High School graduate, accepted a $500 Academic Opportunity Award in art and design. Younger, daughter of Randy and Erin Younger, Limon, plans to major in art and design.

Merino (80741): 

Allyssa Funk, a 2016 Prairie High School graduate, accepted a $1,500 Hays City Scholar Award and a $500 Academic Opportunity Award in biological sciences. Funk, daughter of Bryan Funk, Merino, and Dawn Tupper, Sterling, plans to major in biology.

Kayelani Kirschbaum, a 2016 Merino High School graduate, accepted a $2,000 University Scholar Award. Kirschbaum, daughter of Charles and Kimberly Kirschbaum, Merino, plans to major in biology.

Rachel Mari, a 2016 Merino High School graduate, accepted a $1,000 Traditions Scholar Award and a $900 Academic Opportunity Award in agriculture. She also won the drawing for a $400 FHSU Student Recognition Program Scholarship. Mari, daughter of Robert and Kristie Mari, Merino, plans to major in agriculture.

Otis (80743): 

Teresa Davis, a 2016 Otis High School graduate, accepted a $1,000 Traditions Scholar Award and a $500 Academic Opportunity Award in nursing. Davis, daughter of Nick and Angie Gallegos, Otis, plans to major in nursing.

Stratton (80836): 

Larae Elwood, a 2016 Stratton High School graduate, accepted a $1,000 Traditions Scholar Award and a $500 Academic Opportunity Award in nursing. Elwood, daughter of Steve and Kristen Elwood, Stratton, plans to major in nursing.

Celine Hornung, a 2014 Stratton High School graduate and a Northeastern Junior College transfer student, accepted a $1,500 Transfer Student Award. Hornung, daughter of Billy Jr. and Jeanine Hornung, Stratton, plans to major in agricultural business.

Levi Sanders, a 2016 Cheyenne Wells High School graduate, accepted a $1,500 Hays City Scholar Award and a $900 Academic Opportunity Award in agriculture. Sanders, son of Mark and Diane Sanders, Towner, plans to major in agriculture.

Yuma (80759): 

Layne Andrews, a 2016 Yuma High School graduate, accepted a $1,000 Traditions Scholar Award. Andrews, son of Jim and Angela Andrews, Yuma, plans to major in agricultural business.

Melissa Garcia, a 2016 Yuma High School graduate, accepted a $1,000 Traditions Scholar Award. Garcia, daughter of Bernado and Isela Garcia, Yuma, plans to major in accounting.

Luz Sanchez, a 2014 Yuma High School graduate and a Dodge City, Kan., Community College transfer student, accepted a $1,500 FHSU Transfer Student Award. Luz, daughter of Francisco Sanchez and Lidia Cisneros, Yuma, plans to major in early childhood education
