Books Need Homes Too – Free Books at Kiowa County Public Library

Kemma Alfano, Librarian

Every library has many jobs to do, hats to wear, and services to provide. The most commonly known service, though, is books. Everyone knows a library has books, but did you ever wonder what we do with books that are no longer being borrowed? We “weed” them!

Weeding is a term used by libraries all across the nation. It’s just like weeding your garden; only at the library we are weeding non circulating books. I could give you the long list of how and why, but that’s not what this article is about. (If you want to know about the library ways though, feel free to stop by any time. I’d be happy to share the details.)

Every library does different things with their weeded books; donate them to other libraries, give them away as prizes, have a book sale, and much more. We put our weeded books on our book sale. Our book sale is a continuous year round sale that is set up in the back of the library. Once a book has been on our sale for one year we find it a new home. That being said we have an over abundance of books ready for their new home. Instead of offering the books to other libraries and organizations, we want to offer them to our community first!

Anyone, and everyone, is more than welcome to stop by and take as many of these homeless books they want for FREE! We want to be able to say thank you to the community for supporting us, and this is a small simple gesture that we can do. We have many different genres available in both adult and juvenile literature: mystery, western, romance, thriller, fantasy, history, gardening, self help, and much more. Come to the library anytime from now until February 9th to offer these free books a needed home. First come, first serve! Thank you for supporting your library.
