From the Extension Agent’s Desk
Workshop Information
Well, I’m coming to the end of my first month as the Kiowa County Agent and it couldn’t have gone any better! I’ve met a lot of people, taken giant steps in remembering where and what things are, and attended some pretty nifty workshops to bring back information locally. I’d like to share some of the topics with you in case you are interested and would like more information.
The first workshop was a county educator’s event in Goodwell, OK with OSU Extension. It began with a presentation focusing on keys to prepping for sorghum planting and identifying sugarcane aphids. The next presentation was by Dr. Britt Hicks on what is the ideal cow. This presentation to me was particularly fascinating as he looked at cow size, weaning weights, milking ability, and maintenance. Other areas topics covered during the day reflected on determining client needs, getting started with Ag Futures to minimize risk, and range management.
The other workshop I attended was in Kirk, CO that dealt with managing rangeland during drought. This program was put on by NRCS out of Yuma County and the presenters were both current and retired Extension Specialists with CSU. We looked at how plants grow, how important bud formation is to creating cover, rotational grazing, and did a range field study. There was a whole lot of useful information that came out of this workshop which mirror challenges here in Kiowa County.
That is a very brief synopsis of the workshops that I attended in the last month. Hopefully one of these topics will interest you. If so, please call or stop by the office and I will set you up with all the information that I received. If we need to, we can even get in touch with any of the presenters if questions arise for which we can’t find an answer. Also, if none of these topics interest you, let me know what does. Your suggestion is bound to interest other people and we can build some programming to fit your particular needs.
