Man Found in Field South of Eads Facing Multiple Charges

The Kiowa County Sheriff's Office says a man found in a field southeast of Eads is facing numerous charges.

Deputies were summoned Wednesday to a location near County Roads E and 46.5 south of Nee Noshe Reservoir about a report of a man lying in a field. There they found Brian Mason of Lamar, who was transported by ambulance to Weisbrod Memorial Hospital in Eads.

The Colorado State Patrol, with funding from the Colorado Department of Transportation, will begin the holiday weekend DUI enforcement period Friday with stepped-up patrols and checkpoints.

Nearly 100 law enforcement agencies across the state are joining The Heat Is On campaign to promote awareness of the dangers of driving drunk or high, and encourage safe rides to or from holiday gatherings and other activities.

So far in 2018, 193 people have died in crashes, with over one-third of those fatalities involving an impaired driver. 

Drought Continues to Deepen in Colorado Despite Improvements in the Northeast

Despite the start of spring thunderstorms, Colorado's drought situation continued to deteriorate. One-third of the state is in the two worst categories of drought.

Some areas showed improvements, with the northeast and north central areas continuing to lead that trend as the area benefitted from moderate to heavy rain, with some locations receiving up to three inches of rain.

Governor Visits Sand Creek Massacre Historic Site

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper visited the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site in Kiowa County Wednesday to pay respects to those who died in the 1864 attack led by Colorado U.S. Volunteer Cavalry led by Colonel John Chivington. Peaceful Cheyenne and Arapaho native Americans were camped at the location and received assurances they would not be harmed. Instead, Chivington's attack left 230 people dead, more than half of whom were women and children.

Agriculture producers across 34 Colorado counties may now eligible for physical loss loans due to damages from fires and high winds that occurred this year between February 13 and April 19, as well as a blizzard and high winds that occurred April 13-14. The deadline to apply is January 9, 2019.

Producers in Baca, Chaffee, El Paso, Las Animas, Prowers, Pueblo and Washington counties - designated at primary damage areas - may be eligible for the low-interest loans if they suffered "severe physical losses" which can include buildings and livestock.

Earthquake Sunday South of Colorado-New Mexico Border

A small earthquake was recorded Sunday evening just across Colorado's southern border with New Mexico

The quake, measuring 2.7 on the Richter Scale, occurred just after 5:00 p.m. at a depth of about five miles beneath the surface according to the United States Geological Survey. It was centered 100 miles southwest of Pueblo in a sparsely populated area of New Mexico.

The USGS has not received any citizen reports of feeling the earthquake.
