Drought takes sharp turn for the worse in Colorado

Reflecting recent warm, dry weather in the state, western Colorado saw expansion of the worst drought categories, while dry conditions grew in the northeast.

Exceptional drought expanded further east a week after it had advanced to the north into Mesa and Delta counties. This week's increases now cover all of Ouray and Archuleta counties and most of Hinsdale and Mineral counties. Southwest Gunnison County and western Conejos County also moved into exceptional conditions.

A week after drought had stabilized in Colorado, conditions degraded dramatically, particularly for the western half of the state.

Mesa and Delta counites, along with northwest Gunnison County, saw extreme drought replaced by exceptional drought - the worst category - as hot and dry conditions persisted in the area.

Employers in Colorado added 1,500 nonfarm payroll jobs from July to August for a total of 2,740,500 jobs, according to the survey of business establishments. There was no change in private sector payroll jobs and government increased 1,500. July estimates were revised up to 2,739,000, and the over the month increase from June to July was 4,500 rather than the originally estimated 2,800.

Cargill recalls 66 tons of beef for suspected E. coli contamination

Cargill Meat Solutions in Fort Morgan is recalling 132,606 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with Escherichia coli O26, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Wednesday.

The ground beef items were produced and packaged June 21, 2018. The following products are subject to recall:

CSU Master Gardener program returning to southeast Colorado

It has been quite a while since Colorado State University Extension has offered the Master Gardener program in the southeast area. With renewed interest in the program, applications are being accepted for Master Gardner classes which will be conducted in 2019. The host location will be determined by where the majority of the applications are centered. Southeast area extension offices are located in Baca, Bent, Cheyenne, Crowley, Kiowa, Otero, and Prowers counties.
