While portions of southeast Colorado border counties showed some improvement in drought conditions, a new area of "exceptional drought" - the worst category - appeared elsewhere in the region.
Eastern Kiowa, Prowers and Baca counties showed improvement over the previous week, moving to moderate and severe drought. A small portion of northeast Kiowa County shifted into abnormally dry conditions, while much of Baca County has shed extreme drought over the past month as early summer storms continue to bring much-needed moisture to the area.
Due to lower water levels in Rampart Reservoir and related safety concerns, the management partners of the reservoir site will close the boat ramp and watercraft inspection station for the remainder of the season, starting at 5 p.m., Sunday, July 15.
Management partners include Colorado Springs Utilities, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and the U.S. Forest Service. The decreased water levels in Rampart Reservoir are affecting the operability and safety of the boat ramp for launching and loading trailered/motorized boats.
Starting Monday, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), Colorado State Patrol (CSP) and local law enforcement agencies across the state will conduct a seven-day high-visibility Click It or Ticketenforcement period targeting rural areas of Colorado. These areas tend to have the lowest seat belt use rates in the state. Currently, Colorado's statewide seat belt use rate is 84 percent, ranking Colorado in the bottom third in the nation.
The Colorado Farm Bureau Foundation has activated its disaster relief fund to support farmers and ranchers who have been affected by the many fires burning throughout Colorado. One hundred percent of donationswill be distributed to agriculture producers who have suffered losses due to these fires.
The Boulder County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a man struck by lightning while camping at Ruby Gulch Saturday afternoon.
According to BCSO, an emergency call came in around 2:30 p.m. in which a woman reported that her boyfriend had been struck while he was standing next to their tent. They were camping near Forest Service Road 328E in Boulder County.
As fires scorched more than 200,000 acres in Colorado, drought conditions deteriorated for part of the state.
Abnormally dry conditions expanded in western Larimer county, while moderate drought returned to northern Routt County, along with smaller portions of Moffat and Jackson counties.
Conditions in the remainder of the state remained stable, with more than one-third of Colorado in extreme over exceptional conditions, the two worst catagories.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is asking for the public's help in collecting information related to two mountain goats that were shot and found dead July 3, approximately 2.8 miles up the Quandary Peak Trail in Summit County.
