The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) has announced the award of $3.4 million for research into the development of new wheat varieties that are adapted to different geographical regions and environmental conditions. The seven projects are funded through NIFA's new International Wheat Yield Partnership (IWYP) program, part of the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI).

Rules Seek to Ensure Fairness and Protect Rights of Farmers

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration (GIPSA) today announced updated regulations to protect the rights of farmers. The Farmer Fair Practices Rules target the most harmful practices hurting farmers and clearly outlines common sense protections to restore fairness and reduce the burden for farmers seeking justice under the Packers and Stockyards Act. This is the most recent action in the Obama's Administration's efforts to level the playing field for all Americans.

It is tradition for the Colorado Association of Wheat Growers (CAWG), Colorado Wheat Administrative Committee (CWAC), and the Colorado Wheat Research Foundation (CWRF) to present Colorado Wheat awards when someone has provided exceptional service to Colorado wheat producers.  At the Colorado Wheat awards banquet December 1, 2016 at the Longmeadow Event Center in Wiggins, Colorado, three awards were given.

USDA Announces New Conservation Opportunities to Improve Water Quality and Restore Wildlife Habitat

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has  announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will offer farmers and ranchers more opportunities to participate in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). The announcement includes new CRP practices to protect water quality and adds an additional 1.1 million acres targeted to benefit wildlife, pollinators and wetlands.

Funding Available for Agricultural Energy Projects

The Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA) and the Colorado Energy Office (CEO) are seeking applicants for agricultural energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. The total amount available for assistance in FY 2017 is $250,000. The funding is available to Colorado agricultural irrigators, dairies, greenhouses, nurseries, and cold storage facilities.

New provisions to take effect for 2017 spring crops

The USDA's Risk Management Agency last week announced updated factors for prevented planting coverage, with these updates made in an effort to address the recommendations of a 2013 USDA Office of Inspector General (OIG) report. The USDA says these improvements will ensure that the program continues to be a well-run program that provides a strong safety net for producers.
