The suspect in the murder of a Bent County woman has been captured in Peoria, Illinois, after a nationwide bulletin was issued for his arrest.
The Bent's Fort Chapter of the Santa Fe Trail Association annual meeting will be held January 13 at the JW Rawlings Heritage Center and Museum, 560 Bent Avenue, in Las Animas. The general meeting will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by a catered lunch. The meeting will include the election of officers for 2018, announcement of the Member of the Year, a review of upcoming field trips and presentations in 2018, and an update on the 2021 Santa Fe Trail Association Symposium.

Three state water engineers who were instrumental in breaking a 40-year deadlock between Colorado and Kansas to secure water for a permanent fish and wildlife conservation pool in John Martin Reservoir were honored Thursday by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission at its meeting here.
For their "outstanding support of Colorado's wildlife," CPW Director Bob Broscheid praised recently retired State Engineer Dick Wolfe, Steve Witte, Arkansas River Basin division engineer, and Bill Tyner, deputy Arkansas River Basin engineer.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is seeking the public's assistance in helping to identify the person or people responsible for the murder of a Bent county woman dating back to 1997.
The body of Deborah Reid, 34, was discovered under a bridge approximately 16 miles east of Walsenburg August 14, 1997. Though the cause of Reid's death could not be determined, investigators believe she was murdered.
Reid was reported missing by her sister and ex-husband when she did not arrive at her job at the Bent County Corrections Facility on August 4, 1997.
