We all know that someone will find Jenkins's cabin. Someday. Oh, it's up there in those hills somewhere. We all know that.

It's become a friendly object of conjecture and speculation. No one living has seen it, as far as we know. Jenkins himself died quietly when he was on one of his infrequent trips to town for supplies. Funny guy, that Jenkins.

The annual Fourth of July picnic was a celebration of time and freedom. We'd all watched the parade, earlier, because that's what you do on the Fourth, and we believe in it.

Our parade features Scout troops in uniform, the high school band, floats with pretty girls ... well, okay, it's actually Delbert's convertible with signs on the doors ... and little kids proudly leading their dogs down our main street. In other words, pretty much everyone.

Dud rounded the corner on his block and headed for the edge of town at an easy jog. Well, easy for an Olympic miler, he thought. It was making him breathe hard and he wasn't even a block from the house. But this is the price. Oh yes, the price I must pay for my goal.

"Dud," said Doc, "I worry about you spending so much time agonizing over that book of yours."

"I have to do it, Doc," Dud said. "There are still so many things to plan in the book. Things like the duchess's daughter and her relationship with the truck driver on special assignment ..."

"Carnsider this for a minute, boys," Windy said, sadly shaking his head at the King Arthur memorial round table at the Mule Barn truck stop. "I mean to say, well you know them ladies actually asked me to be their speaker, right?"

We nodded and sipped our early afternoon coffee.

Our day is filled with heat at this time of year. It commands our attention and makes our work harder. As we toil, we daydream not about love or success, but things as mundane as shade and a cool drink.

But though the oppressive heat weighs on our brains and taxes our bodies, it is the price we pay for being allowed to spend time outdoors ... and it has its one singular consolation: our summer evenings.

When the sun goes down in summer, it's romantic enough to hug a cactus.

The young reporter might have gone overboard a bit by writing "... with a pure heart, strong arms and a shovel, Dewey Decker pioneered a civilization based on cow manure."

Maybe just a little...

Steve looked out from the turret of his cabin and watched the sun set behind the mountain. Branding is over for the spring, and he was able to get away from the ranch for a few days, so here he was, in his private castle, sipping private coffee, looking down at his private horse eating hay in his private corral.

For a man who has spent most of his life in a bunkhouse, a suite at the Ritz couldn't be more wonderful than this little hole-up spot in the mountains.
