Dud had been sitting there looking at his computer for 20 minutes and he hadn't gotten any more done on the book. You know the one. Dud calls it "Murder in the Soggy Bottoms," and the rest of us call it "The Duchess and the Truck Driver" because the two main characters are .... yeah, you understand.
It begins in early morning, when the early risers among us go out to do the chores. Later on, the day may seem almost summer hot, but early in the morning, we can feel it. We can sense autumn. Our eyes that are so tired from the sun's burning can look silently around at the slight turning of the leaves, and we'll know. It's coming. We can feel it.
It's fair time again. Time for dreams to come true and for disappointments to temporarily sweep through our lives. But the disappointments can't really get much of a purchase, because there's too much fun going on.
It's not that our pal Herb isn't sociable. He is. One of the nicest guys around, and he can be counted on to start a conversation at the drop of a hat. And he'll even drop the hat.
No, the reason Herb hasn't been in for coffee much this week, we know, is the archery tournament coming up. He's out there in the field shooting every day. He does go bowhunting each fall, but we know that it's the mystery and magic of archery itself that is the big draw to him.
He has explained it to us several times before.
While KiowaCountyPress.net was able to post an overhead view of the 2017 Kiowa County Fair Parade immediately after the event ended, we've been working to bring you another view - this time from street level, with the whole parade, which origianally lasted nearly 40 minutes, down to a six minute video. You can also check our Facebook page for photos.
A bunch of us went to the races up in the city the other day. Windy won a little, but the rest of us just kinda broke even, and we got to yell and cheer, so I guess that can cost two bucks without hamstringing the entire regiment. It was fun.
It was Thursday again. Mabel Adams asked at the desk to be sure.
"Thursday all day, Mabel," the girl said. "Don't forget to get your hair done today. Two o'clock ... right?"
"Right," Mabel said, locking the time away in her mind. "Two o'clock. On Thursday."
She took her purple walker and went half a block to the counter at the drug store.
That nice Williams girl came over with a smile and a menu.
"Tuna on toast, Mrs. Adams?"
"Uh, sure. I like that."

"I took Duckworth to the dog show up in the city last weekend," Dud said.
The other members of the Mule Barn truck stop's world dilemma think tank and philosophy counter just looked at him.
Doc put it gently. "Dud, was this so he could get some inspiration on looking good?"
