Lamar Community College has named Dr. Lisa Schlotterhausen as the next Vice President for Academic and Student Services. Dr. Schlotterhausen, who is currently serving as the Interim Dean of Academic Affairs at Riverland Community College in Austin, Minnesota, will assume her role at LCC on April 16, 2018.
As fields and reservoirs are turning white with the arrival of roosting waterfowl during their traditional winter migration, plans are well underway for the annual celebration known as the High Plains Snow Goose Festival scheduled February 8-11.
In its 16th year, the festival attracts families, bird watchers and a variety of outdoor enthusiasts to see the Arctic geese as they arrive at their winter roosts along the Western Central Flyway that includes Colorado, New Mexico and the Texas panhandle.
Lamar Community College students to provide free tax preparation to area families
This tax season, Lamar Community College is partnering with Denver-based Piton Foundation to help hard-working families become more financially secure by providing free tax preparation services through the Tax Help Colorado program. Beginning February 2, 2018, IRS-certified LCC students will prepare and file tax returns free of charge for individuals with household incomes of less than about $54,000 a year.
January 25, Lamar Community College will be hosting a stakeholder planning meeting regarding improvements to a portion of the Willow Creek Nature Trail that sits on its property. The meeting will be held from 5:30-7:00pm in the Large Lecture Hall of LCC's Bowman Building; all in the community are invited to attend.
"We are lucky to have such a unique outdoor space on our property, and we are excited about improving it for the benefit of our students and the community." said Sean Lirley, Director of Facilities.
With the retirement of Vice President Cheryl Sanchez, Lamar Community College will be hosting finalists for the position of Vice President of Academic and Student Services January 18-19.
LCC President Linda Lujan stated, "I am very grateful for VP Sanchez's dedicated service and look forward to finding just the right individual to replace her. The screening committee was quite pleased with the large and competitive pool of applicants and spent considerable time throughout the search process working to identify strong finalists."
When it comes to rescuing and preserving our endangered species, Colorado Parks and Wildlife staffers will trek to all corners of the state, day and night, good weather and bad, to fulfill their mission.
That was the case December 13 as a CPW team from Denver and Colorado Springs drove hours to the far southeast edge of the state to make sure four black-footed ferrets were carefully and properly deposited in new burrows as part of the agency's ongoing efforts to rebuild a population twice thought to be extinct.
Lamar Community College's Beta Eta Gamma chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society welcomed 14 new members in an induction ceremony on November 2, 2017.
The new inductees included Chet Adams (Hoehne), Harley Anstead (Ignacio), Michelle Batista-Majalca (Johnstown), Jenaye de Seve (Canyon Country, CA), Dillon Fisher (Springfield), Tyler Geddes (Lamar), Shelby Hawkins (Elizabeth), Miles Hilton (Albuquerque, NM), Laura Lindholm (Eads), Haleigh Prosser (Wiley), Adrianna Ruggieri (Stockton, NJ), Mayrene Slatton-McCoy (Lamar), Celia Tamayo (Lamar), and Sarah Trosper (Lamar).
Lamar Community College will be hosting an Open House November 16, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Betz Technology Center.
"We are excited to be adding a fall Open House to our schedule this year," said Tori Hawks, Coordinator of Recruiting at LCC. "At the Open House, we can help students apply for admission, apply for scholarships, introduce them to professors, and learn more about LCC in general. We hope to see a lot of new faces here that night and help everyone that walks through the doors."
A celebration of life for longtime Lamar resident, Lorene Vivian Ply, affectionately known to her family and friends as Vivian will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 6, 2017 at the Lamar Christian Church with Ian Blacker officiating. Interment will follow at Fairmount Cemetery.
Visitation for Vivian will be held Sunday, November 5, 2017, from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Peacock Family Chapel.
