Former Legislator, Businessman Elwood Gillis Dies

Former Colorado State Representative and businessman Elwood Gillis died Tuesday at the age of 83. His daughters were at his side.

Gillis served in the state legislature from 1981 to 1990, and chaired the Joint Budget Committee, which oversees the state's annual budget. He also served as Mayor of Lamar in Prowers county from 1994 to 1995.

He was well-known in southeast Colorado as owner and operator of a number of businesses starting in 1963, and as a member of civic groups such as the Masons, Lion's Club, and Lamar Jaycees.

Cold Air Moves in Friday – Snow for the Weekend

A cold front will be moving across eastern Colorado Friday, bringing much cooler temperatures to the eastern plains as the day progresses.

High temperatures for the northeast quarter of the state will largely remain below freezing. Julesburg will only reach the mid-teens while the Sterling and Fort Morgan area will be slightly warmer. Further south, the highs in Limon and Eads will be in the 30s before falling off as the front spreads to the south and west. Springfield and areas further west can expect to reach the 50s, while Trinidad will see 60 for a time.

Structure Fire Closes US 24 Between Stratton and Vona

This article has been updated to reflect the road reopening.

The Colorado Department of Transportation reported Saturday afternoon that US Highway 24 was closed in both directions between Vona and Stratton. It has since reopened.

A structure fire in the area led to the closure, which was first reported Saturday at 3:07 p.m. The road was reopened about an hour later.

Information about the building and damages was not immediately available.
