Warm, dry days and cool evenings are in store across the weekend for Kiowa County.

Highs will be in the low to mid-70s Friday through Sunday. Winds will remain light, 5-10 miles per hour, through most of the period - with slightly stronger 15 mph wind Saturday afternoon.

Overnight, temperatures will be in the lower 40s Friday and Saturday, and falling to the upper 30s Sunday night.

Drought Conditions Continue Expanding in SE Colorado

Warm and dry early spring conditions continued to expand the area impacted by drought in southeast Colorado over the past week.

All of Baca and Prowers Counties are now in moderate drought. Kiowa and Bent Counties had smaller areas in drought last week, which has expanded to cover most of Kiowa and essentially all of Bent.

Drought continued to expand in Las Animas County, and now also impacts eastern Otero County.

Gardner Announces USDA Grant for Flood Projects in Colorado

Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) has announced the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Emergency Watershed Protection (EWP) program will make $10,240,800 available to Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs for the purposes of restoration and flood mitigation after severe weather impacted the region last year. Gardner sent a letter on July 10, 2015 to President Obama requesting federal assistance for several counties in Colorado impacted by significant weather events.

The Centennial Farms program honors working farms and ranches that have been in the same family for 100 years or more. Centennial Farms are honored at the Colorado State Fair every August. Know a farm that qualifies? Get details on eligibility, the application form and more.

Jobs Available Through Career Expo

Lamar Community College's annual Career Expo will be held on Wednesday, April 13, 2016, from 9:00am until noon in the LCC Wellness Center.  The Career Expo serves as part career exploration, part career fair for the community.  Lamar Community College students and community members are invited and encouraged to attend.

Nearly 50 businesses have confirmed their spaces at the Career Expo, with several promising current career openings that expo-goers can learn about and apply for. 

Trauma Specialist to Address Students about Choices


Lori Morgan, a trauma prevention specialist from UCHealth Memorial Hospital, will be visiting Eads High School for a presentation to teens that will center on making smart choices.  

Specifically, students at Eads High School will learn how the choices they make while driving could impact not only their own life, but the lives of their family members, friends and the entire community.

The program, titled, "Trauma Talks Tough," will be held at the school this Thursday, April 7; at 1:15 p.m. Approximately 50 students are expected to attend the session.

Lesser Prairie-Chicken Population Improves in Colorado

Colorado Parks and Wildlife shares in the success reported March 31, 2016 by the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (WAFWA), on the status of the lesser prairie chicken. This report is the second since the implementation of the Lesser Prairie-Chicken Range-wide Conservation Plan in 2014.

"The lesser prairie-chicken range-wide plan, because it's incentive based and voluntary, is the new model for conservation and the best alternative to listing species," said Bob Broscheid, CPW director and Colorado's representative to the Lesser Prairie-Chicken Council. 

High Fire Danger Tuesday Across Southern Colorado

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for Tuesday (April 5, 2016) from 12:00 to 8:00 p.m. for much of southern Colorado including Kiowa County to due high fire danger. The warning replaces the Fire Weather Watch that was previously in effect.

In addition to Kiowa County, all or large portions of Fremont, El Paso, Pueblo, Huerfano, Las Animas, Crowley, Otero, Bent, Prowers and Baca Counties are under the warning. The San Luis Valley and neighboring counties in Oklahoma and New Mexico are also included.
