Arkansas Basin Water Forum begins Wednesday

The 22nd annual Arkansas River Basin Water Forum will offer a spectrum of informed presentations about basin water issues Wednesday and Thursday, April 27 and 28, at the SteamPlant Event Center, 220 W. Sackett Ave., in Salida.

Themed "The Color of Water," the forum will feature keynote speakers, expert panels and informal discussions in an open, collaborative setting that encourages learning about all aspects of water.

Gardner Votes to Protect Colorado Water Rights

Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) has voted in favor of an amendment to the Senate Energy and Water Development appropriations bill that prevents the Army Corps of Engineers from using funding to enforce the Waters of the United States (WOTUS) regulation. WOTUS, developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Army Corps of Engineers, redefines and expands waters that are subject to Clean Water Act regulations, and has the potential to impact an additional 1 million acres and 170,000 miles of stream in Colorado.   

Illegal Hunting Nets Big Fine

Thanks to a tip to Colorado Parks and Wildlife from a concerned hunter, a Fruita man is guilty of numerous charges of illegal big game hunting on the Uncompahgre Plateau.

Melvin Weaver, 59, whose last known address was in Fruita, pleaded guilty to two counts of illegal hunting, take and possession of big game; two counts of illegal big game hunting without a license; and one count of illegally taking a trophy elk, also known as the Samson Law. He was originally charged with 13 violations. The plea was accepted by the Mesa County court on March 15.

Gardner, Wicker, Heitkamp, and Colleagues Encourage Support of 4-H

The Senate unanimously approved a bipartisan resolution introduced by Senators Cory Gardner (R-CO), Roger Wicker (R-MS), and Heidi Heitkamp, (D-ND) in support of 4-H and its recently-launched "Grow True Leaders" campaign. The measure, which is cosponsored by 34 senators, recognizes the immeasurable benefits of the national 4-H program for young people and its potential growth under the new initiative.

Golden Plains Insurance Continues Colorado Expansion

Lamar-based Golden Plains Insurance Agency, Inc. has announced another expansion with the acquisition of Jennifer Morlan Insurance, LLC, of Lamar. The purchase becomes effective May 1, 2016.

Jennifer Morlan Insurance opened in 2009 to successfully serve clients across southeast Colorado, most recently from an office at 420 North Main Street in Lamar. Golden Plains is also acquiring that building.

Strong to severe storms are possible over the far eastern portion of southeast Colorado Saturday, including most of Kiowa County.

Temperatures will rise to the low 80s for the day, accompanied by 15-20 mile-per-hour winds gusting to 35 mph in the afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms could form after 4:00 p.m. Overnight temperatures will fall to the mid-40s.

Sunday and Monday will see highs in the mid-70s and wind speeds falling to 10-15 mph.

Colorado residents who renew their driver license or identification card online will now receive a newly designed card. Customers are always first in line when they renew online at

Renewing online allows customers to avoid visiting a DMV office. It also offers individuals the opportunity to update their current physical and mailing addresses. Individuals may renew their driver license up to two consecutive times online. The most recent photo on file with the DMV is used when renewing online.
