“Start children off in the way they should go and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” Proverbs 22:6

There was so much news last week to share with you that I didn’t write about what was really on my mind and memory from the night before at Praise Community Church. This was the night that the “Down East Boys” were in Eads for a gospel concert. This gospel group has been coming to Eads for about 30 years by our friends and hosts, Jimmy and Amanda Brown. They are a wonderful group who added even more colored lighting and pretty videos to some of their songs this year. They offered t-shirts, caps, and their new CD of singing in a huge cathedral in Ireland. After intermission, they asked Bill and Charlotte Woelk and me to come forward, where Pastor Canaday and Lane Gooden spoke about the goodness and community support that the Woelk’s, age 94 and 92, continue to give in the community. Then Jimmy Brown spoke about me and school days, and us when he played the piano and I sang at churches, banquets, and funerals. They warmly thanked us for our support through the years to churches, communities, and schools, even though the Woelk’s worship in Sheridan Lake, and I attend in Kit Carson. Pastor Mrs. Gooden arranged for us to be given large floral arrangements from Trista Tuttle’s Country Elegance shop, and extra-large cards autographed by many members of the Praise Community Church members. After the musical service, folks enjoyed bountiful arrays of cookies and snacks.

I heard the next day the church was entertained by many children who came together from the community to sing in a delightful choir. They wore white caplet robes and waved sticks with white streamers. What a joy that must have been to hear and watch.

Mary Ellen Englehardt has been so gracious to come up to Weisbrod and be the Bingo caller two times while our Brenda Leon is recuperating from a foot operation. At the first of the month, she changed the dining room display to an orange afghan that her mother, Etta Berger, knitted. Mary Ellen is the secretary of the Hospital Auxiliary.

We are really missing the cheerfulness of Brenda Leon while she is gone several weeks.

Last week, a number of us waited outside on the balcony in the chilly air and sun. It was worth it because, after the pep rally, the girls from Eads, and those from Wiley and McClave, loaded into vans and drove by waving out sliding doors and windows to the blare of the fire trucks and Sheriff’s trucks and vehicles. Thursday, we watched the #3 rank Southeast Colorado Angels play two games in the state tournament in Aurora. They won those two games, but lost the game against Brush Saturday. We are so grateful that Weisbrod bought the TV app so we can enjoy all these local sports games

Please remember prayerfully our friend and former extension agent, George Ellicott, who may soon need to be in a nursing home in Nebraska. His wife, Dorothy, is at their granddaughter’s home in North Platte.

We were so glad to see Al Seibel here from Wyoming to visit and care for his sister, Sarah Seibel Ferris, after her open-heart surgery. I hadn’t seen Al for 50 years. He was a blonde high school state wrestling champion and our hero. Now he is a very handsome silver-haired man. This week, Sarah’s sister, Jean, is here from Florida visiting her and their mother, Loretta Seibel.

Justin Lenox and Miss Brooklyn Lenox sponsored Eads FFA students to the National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. His wife, Kaylee, who usually goes on the trip and enjoys it so much, but she needed to stay home with their newborn, son, Ruger.

Reading the sports schedules in the Kiowa County Press, it looks as if the football and volleyball games are winding down at all schools, and soon will be in league playoffs. This has been an exciting year for high school sports. I just regret the sports injuries I have heard about. However, I am so glad that we have such good medical services here. I see several sports boys and girls come here for doctor appointments and visits to our fine physical therapists who serve people from many area towns and schools.
