Cheyenne Wells and Cheyenne County will see a breezy, sunny start to the week, with gusty south-southwest winds Monday afternoon followed by calmer days Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Goodland, Kan.

Monday will be sunny with a high near 79 and a south wind around 15 mph, but gusts could reach 25 to 40 mph in the afternoon. Monday night will be mostly clear with a low around 54.

“Breezy conditions expected Monday afternoon, with gusts generally in the 25-40 MPH range from the southwest,” a meteorologist with the forecast office in Goodland, Kan., wrote in Sunday’s Area Forecast Discussion.

Low fire and blowing-dust risk, no warnings in effect

The Goodland office said the gusty winds bring a low but increased risk of blowing dust and fire weather concerns Monday. The threat is limited because humidity and atmospheric conditions are not strongly supportive in the strongest-wind areas. Areas along and northwest of a line from Wray to Flagler have a somewhat better chance of relative humidity in the teens, but gusts there are expected to stay under about 35 mph. Forecasters said there is less than a 10 percent chance that any lofted dust would cut visibility below one mile.

No watches, warnings or advisories were in effect for Colorado counties in the Goodland forecast area in Sunday night’s discussion. A cold front is expected to sweep through between about 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. Tuesday, bringing a quick shift in wind direction and perhaps a brief increase in gusts. The chance of weak showers with the front is about 10 percent.

Tuesday and Wednesday

Tuesday will be sunny and the warmest day of the week, with a high near 85 and winds around 5 mph. Forecasters will watch Tuesday for fire weather: humidity could drop to 20 to 25 percent west of Kansas Highway 27, with gusts up to 25 to 30 mph. The Goodland office said that does not reach critical levels.

Wednesday will be sunny with a high near 79 and a low Wednesday night around 53.

Extended outlook

Thursday is forecast to be sunny with a high near 78, and Friday sunny with a high near 76. Breezier afternoons with gusts of 30 to 40 mph are possible from Friday through Sunday, forecasters said.

The Goodland office said models disagree about a possible upper-level trough arriving around Sunday, and the forecast could change. Extended Climate Prediction Center outlook probabilities were not included because the National Weather Service forecast already covers Thursday and Friday.

Drivers should be alert for gusty crosswinds Monday afternoon, especially on east-west highways.
