Cheyenne Wells will see a mild, breezy Friday in the wake of overnight thunderstorms before a steady warm-up that pushes Memorial Day highs into the upper 80s, the National Weather Service in Goodland, Kan., said in a forecast issued early Friday.

Friday is expected to be mostly sunny across Cheyenne County, with a high near 64 and north winds of 10 to 20 mph gusting to 35 mph behind a cold front that swept the region overnight. Skies turn mostly cloudy after dark, with an overnight low near 42 and only a slight chance of showers between 1 and 3 a.m.

“There is a 30% chance that several rounds of thunderstorms may lead to localized flooding in low lying areas and small streams early Friday morning,” a meteorologist with the Goodland, Kan., forecast office wrote in Friday’s Area Forecast Discussion, referring to the system already exiting the area. Behind the front, the forecaster wrote, winds will become “northwest at 15 kts gusting to around 25-30 kts.”

A warmer, quieter weekend

Saturday brings a notable rebound, with mostly sunny skies, lighter southerly winds and a high near 71. A slight chance of afternoon thunderstorms develops after noon, but coverage should stay isolated. Saturday night returns to mostly clear skies and a low near 45.

Sunday turns sunny and noticeably warmer with a high near 85 as a southerly return flow takes hold across the area. The Goodland forecast describes the long-term setup as “warm and moist conditions throughout the long term period,” with highs centered in the 70s and 80s and afternoon dew points in the 40s and 50s.

Memorial Day weekend

Memorial Day is shaping up as the warmest day of the period in Cheyenne County. Cheyenne Wells is forecast to reach 87 under sunny skies, with light south winds. Outdoor events and travel through the weekend should encounter dry, mild conditions, though afternoon clouds may build briefly each day.

Extended outlook: Monday and Tuesday

Forecasters at the Goodland office say a southwesterly upper-level flow will settle in by Tuesday, raising the chance of afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. The greater storm chances arrive later in the week, but Tuesday brings the period’s most notable wind.

“The one exception to this may be on Tuesday, not because relative humidity values are low, but because wind gusts may reach the 40-45 mph range,” the Goodland forecaster wrote. “If this occurs, existing fires may be capable of spreading rapidly.” No fire weather watch or red flag warning is in effect for the Cheyenne County fire zone.

Safety

Motorists on U.S. 40 and the rural county roads should be prepared for strong crosswinds Friday and again Tuesday. Residents with controlled burns or other outdoor fire activity planned for early next week should monitor updated forecasts from the National Weather Service in Goodland at weather.gov/gld.
