Cheyenne Wells will warm through the first half of the week, with sunshine returning Monday, a high near 93 on Tuesday and a cooler, cloudier Wednesday that carries the area's best chance of showers and thunderstorms.

Monday starts partly sunny in Cheyenne Wells and gradually becomes sunny, with a high near 86, according to the National Weather Service office in Goodland, Kan. A west wind of 5 to 10 mph will turn to the south in the afternoon. Monday night will be mostly clear, with a low around 61 and a south wind of 5 to 10 mph.

"Today, we are forecast to warm up a bit as the upper ridge to the west of the area is forecast to amplify, while winds near the surface shift to out of the south as a surface low develops north of the area," a meteorologist with the National Weather Service forecast office in Goodland, Kan., wrote in Sunday's Area Forecast Discussion. The office put the overall chance of storms developing Monday at about 25 percent, with the best odds along the Tri-State border area and points east.

No warnings posted; isolated storm risk Monday evening

The Goodland office listed no watches, warnings or advisories in effect for its Colorado, Kansas or Nebraska zones as of late Sunday.

Forecasters said any storms that do form Monday would likely develop over eastern Colorado between 2 and 5 p.m. and push east, with the better forcing expected to stay north of the area. Should a storm organize, large hail is the primary concern, though most hail would be half-dollar size or smaller. An isolated wind gust near 60 mph is possible, while the tornado and flooding threats are both described as very low.

Tuesday and Wednesday

Tuesday will be the warmest day of the week in Cheyenne Wells, with sunny skies, a high near 93 and a southwest wind of 5 to 10 mph. Forecasters expect a surface low and cold front to move into the region during the day, though the colder air is expected to lag behind, allowing most of the area to warm into the 90s. Tuesday night will be partly cloudy with a low around 60 as winds shift from the south to the northeast after midnight.

Wednesday turns cooler and cloudier behind the front, with partly sunny skies and a high near 83. A shortwave trough moving through the area is expected to bring thunderstorms ahead of a secondary cold front. Cheyenne Wells has a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Wednesday night, with a low around 58. Forecasters said the primary hazard with those storms would be strong winds, with large hail a secondary concern, and confidence in severe weather is highest north of Interstate 70.

Extended outlook: Thursday and Friday

Thursday will be mostly sunny with a high near 86, followed by a 20 percent chance of evening showers and thunderstorms and a low around 59. Forecasters noted that Thursday's temperature could reach the 90s if clouds clear early enough to allow full heating.

Friday turns sunny and hot again with a high near 92 and a low around 61, with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms overnight. The Goodland office said ridging building in from the west should keep highs in the 90s Friday through Sunday and rain chances at 20 percent or less. While humidity may dip with the heat, forecasters said fire weather conditions are not expected, with wind gusts staying below 25 mph.

Motorists and residents should stay alert for rapidly developing storms Monday evening and again Wednesday night, when gusty winds and hail are possible with little warning.
