Eads and Kiowa County are in for a wet weekend. The National Weather Service in Pueblo calls for showers and possibly a thunderstorm Saturday and Saturday night, with a 100 percent chance of rain and a high near 60. More showers follow Sunday, and the rain should taper off early next week.

Saturday brings showers and possibly a thunderstorm, with a high near 60. It will be breezy. An east wind of 10 to 15 mph turns northeast at 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon, and gusts could reach 35 mph. Forecasters put the chance of rain at 100 percent. A half to three quarters of an inch of new rain is possible during the day.

Saturday night stays wet. Showers and possibly a thunderstorm continue, with a low around 39 and another 100 percent chance of rain. Another half to three quarters of an inch is possible overnight. A north-northeast wind of 15 to 20 mph drops to 10 to 15 mph after midnight, with gusts as high as 30 mph.

"Latest totals are now ranging from 1 to almost 2 inches of additional rain through the day, which lessens the flooding threat and becomes more of a beneficial rain," a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Saturday's Area Forecast Discussion. That range covers the Pueblo office's whole forecast area, not Eads alone. Kiowa County is in that area. Cheyenne County, to the north, belongs to the Goodland, Kan., office, which gives its own area a 30 percent chance of areal and river flooding this weekend.

Colder air and a chance of strong storms

A cold front was expected to slide south across the eastern plains Saturday morning. Pueblo forecasters said it would bring much colder air, with "as much as a 20 degree drop in high temps across the plains." The office's first key message Saturday was that the "focus for heavier rainfall shifts to the eastern plains today and Sunday."

In its Hazardous Weather Outlook, issued at 12:45 a.m. MDT Saturday, the Pueblo office said widespread showers and thunderstorms were expected across its area. It said some storms over the far eastern plains could become strong to severe. The main threats it listed are wind gusts to 50 mph, small hail and cloud-to-ground lightning. The office said the stronger storms could bring gusts to 60 mph and hail up to one inch across. Those are expected especially east and south of a line from Eads to La Junta to Trinidad.

No watches, warnings or advisories were in effect for Kiowa County as of 8 a.m. MDT Saturday, October 24, according to the weather service's active alert feed for the county's forecast zones.

Sunday and Sunday night

Sunday brings more showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 3 p.m. The high is near 58. An east-northeast wind around 10 mph turns south-southeast in the morning. The chance of rain is 90 percent. A tenth to a quarter of an inch is possible, with higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Sunday night keeps showers and possibly a thunderstorm, with a low around 41, a southeast wind of 10 to 15 mph and the same rainfall range.

Pueblo forecasters expect Sunday to be the coolest day of the forecast period, with highs in the 50s for most locations and nearing 60 for the far eastern plains. Their outlook says the storms will shift east through the day, and that the strongest ones, with the greatest rainfall, will be closer to the eastern border in the late afternoon and evening.

Extended outlook

Monday starts mostly cloudy and gradually turns sunny, with a high near 61. The wind is south-southeast at 5 to 10 mph, turning north-northwest in the afternoon. The Eads forecast lists no chance of rain Monday, though the Pueblo discussion expects "lingering isolated to low end scattered showers across the far eastern plains through the morning" for the area as a whole. Monday night is partly cloudy with a low around 38.

Tuesday is partly sunny, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 64 and a south wind of 5 to 15 mph. Tuesday night is mostly clear with a low around 39. Wednesday is sunny with a high near 63, with a north wind of 5 to 10 mph turning southeast in the afternoon. Pueblo forecasters expect dry weather and seasonal temperatures through the rest of the week.

The weekend rain comes from the same storm that flooded parts of southwest and south-central Colorado on Friday, far to the west of Kiowa County. Flood warnings there covered Durango, Bayfield and Ignacio in La Plata County, Pagosa Springs on the San Juan River, and Monte Vista, Del Norte and South Fork along the Rio Grande. No flood alert was issued for Kiowa County, and the Pueblo office said Saturday morning that the mountain flood waters were gradually dropping.
