A fire weather watch has been issued for Cheyenne County for Thursday afternoon through evening as the National Weather Service in Goodland, Kan., forecasts south winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph and relative humidity values around 13 percent — conditions forecasters warn could produce unpredictable fire behavior.

Wednesday will bring scattered rain showers to the region, mainly after noon, with cloudy skies and a high near 69 degrees. South winds will increase to 10 to 25 mph as the afternoon progresses. A chance of showers continues overnight before midnight, with partly cloudy skies and a low around 35 degrees.

Meteorologists in the Goodland forecast office noted in their Tuesday afternoon Area Forecast Discussion that fire weather criteria Thursday showed “a 50 to 60 percent chance of seeing 25-mph gusts” from the south, with a “40 to 50 percent chance of exceeding 40 mph” in parts of the region. Minimum relative humidity values were forecast to drop to the “lower to mid teens.”

Wednesday through Thursday

Scattered rain showers Wednesday afternoon may accumulate a tenth of an inch or more of precipitation before the system clears overnight. Temperatures will rebound Thursday to a high near 76 degrees under sunny skies. Southwest winds of 10 to 20 mph, gusting to 30 mph, will accompany the warmth. A Fire Weather Watch remains in effect for Cheyenne County for Thursday afternoon through evening.
