(Colorado Newsline) While speaking at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago Wednesday, Colorado Governor Jared Polis ripped out a page from a physical copy of Project 2025’s “Mandate for Leadership.”

Project 2025, organized by The Heritage Foundation, is a blueprint to implement conservative policies across the federal government if former President Donald Trump, the Republican candidate for president, wins in November.

“Page 451 says the only legitimate family is a married mother and father, where only the father works,” Polis said. “I’m going to take that one out, I’m going to put that in my pocket so I can share it with undecided voters so they better understand what’s at stake this election.”

Polis became the first openly gay man elected governor in the U.S. in 2018. He said “Project 2025 people” like Trump and Ohio Senator J.D. Vance, Trump’s running mate, are “dangerous” and want to take the country backwards.

“But we aren’t going back, like ever, ever, ever,” Polis said, referencing a Taylor Swift song.

Speakers on the third day of the DNC — which meets every four years to officially nominate candidates for president and vice president, adopt a party platform, and celebrate and network — rallied around reproductive and LGBTQ rights. Vice President Kamala Harris was already officially nominated through a virtual roll call earlier this month, but the convention still held a ceremonial roll call Tuesday night.

Polis cited passages in the conservative playbook that would allow the president to ban abortion in all states, criminalize doctors who provide reproductive health care, and limit access to contraception and in vitro fertilization. It also says states would be required to report miscarriages to a second Trump administration, Polis said.

“As a Redditor, gamer, entrepreneur and Swiftie from the free state of Colorado, I’m excited by Kamala Harris’ vision for protecting and expanding our personal freedom, internet freedom, and economic freedom,” Polis said. “Democrats welcome weird — but we’re not weirdos telling families who can and can’t have kids, who to marry, or how to live our lives.”

Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, has popularized a characterization of Trump and the GOP as “weird.”

Other Coloradans at the DNC include former Governor Roy Romer, Attorney General Phil Weiser, U.S. Senator Michael Bennet, U.S. Representatives Diana DeGette and Jason Crow, and state Representatives Leslie Herod and Bob Marshall. The Colorado Democratic Party has 87 delegates at the DNC.

The last day of the DNC is Thursday.
