Dear Parents and Guardians,

As required by the Colorado House Bill 25-1135, Kiowa County School District RE-1 has updated its student Personal Technology Device (PTD) policy for the upcoming school year. These changes are intended to comply with new state requirements while reducing distractions and supporting student learning. A Personal Technology Device (PTD) includes cell phones, pagers, tablets, laptops, cameras, watches, audio and/or video recorders and players, headphones/earbuds, smart glasses, other body-worn technology, and all other hand-held electronic communication and data storage devices. For elementary and middle school students (K–8), personal technology devices may not be used during the school day, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Elementary students who bring a device to school must keep it stored in their backpack or locker for the entire school day. For high school students (9–12), personal technology devices may be carried during the school day; however, they must be placed in the classroom's designated phone holder at the beginning of each class period and may be retrieved when class ends. Devices may be used during lunch unless a student is on the weekly down/ineligible list, and they may only be used in the classroom with teacher permission. Devices may not be used during passing periods. Students who do not follow these expectations will be subject to disciplinary consequences as outlined in the student handbook (pages 18-19 of the student handbook, found on our website at https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BMj6jg2QrpgjSygw8bxG_naH43mYjJps/view). We appreciate your support in helping us create a focused and positive learning environment for all students. If you have any questions about the updated policy, please contact Mr. Eder or me. Thank you for your continued support. Sincerely,

Randy Holmen
