Building heat headlines the forecast for Prowers County, with sunny skies and a high near 91 in the Lamar area Friday climbing to around 100 Saturday before storm chances increase and temperatures ease early next week.

Friday stays sunny and breezy, with southeast winds of 15 to 20 mph gusting to 30 mph. A stray evening thunderstorm is possible, with no more than a 10 percent chance before 7 p.m. and a low around 62.

"High fire danger continues to ramp up across the area this weekend and into next week," a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Friday's Area Forecast Discussion, citing hot, dry and breezy conditions.

Heat, fire danger and weekend storms

Saturday is the hottest day of the period, sunny with a high near 100 and breezy south winds of 15 to 20 mph increasing to 20 to 25 mph and gusting as high as 45 mph. The combination of heat, gusty winds and dry air raises fire danger; a Fire Weather Watch is in effect Saturday for areas to the west, while the far eastern plains turn their attention to thunderstorms.

The Pueblo office noted that storms developing along a dryline could push toward Prowers and Baca counties Saturday afternoon and evening, where more humid air could let a few briefly strengthen, bringing gusty winds and small hail. Even where storms hold off, breezy and very warm conditions continue.

Saturday and Sunday

Saturday is the hottest day of the stretch, sunny with a high near 100 and breezy south winds gusting as high as 45 mph. A 20 percent chance of afternoon storms continues into Saturday night as the low settles near 63.

Sunday stays sunny and hot with a high near 97 and lighter north-northwest winds turning easterly. A chance of showers and thunderstorms returns Sunday night with a low around 56.

Extended outlook

Daily thunderstorm chances build into next week as a more unsettled pattern develops. Monday and Tuesday turn cooler, with highs in the mid to upper 80s and a 20 to 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly in the afternoon and evening.

With temperatures near 100 Saturday, residents should stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity in the afternoon and use caution with anything that could spark a fire.
