It is with deep love and gratitude that we celebrate the life of Margery Carter.
October 12, 1932, in Palco, Kansas, Thomas and Bernice Coddington welcomed into the world a daughter who would become the heart of so many lives. Across 93 remarkable years, she built a life defined by unwavering faith, steadfast love, and quiet sacrifice.
She married Bernard Richardson June 8, 1950, and together they created a family grounded in love, faith, and perseverance. Bernard preceded her in death November 15, 1973.
In 1982, she married Bill Carter, who also preceded her in death in July of 1987.
Margery leaves behind her children, Phyllis Williams, John Richardson, and Barbara Holzrichter, along with 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to her life. She was also preceded in death by her beloved son, Bradley Richardson, daughter-in-law, Honey Richardson, and son-in-law Lex Holzrichter.
To know her was to know warmth, the kind that filled a home with the scent of her famous cinnamon rolls and made everyone around her feel welcomed and cared for. Her family was her greatest treasure, and she devoted herself to making sure those she loved felt encouraged, prayed for, and deeply cherished.
Her faith guided every part of her life. For 60 years, she faithfully played the organ and piano at the United Methodist Church, filling the sanctuary with music that comforted, uplifted, and marked life’s most meaningful moments. Her church family meant so much to her, and she cared for them with humility and devotion throughout the decades.
Margery never sought recognition for the countless ways she gave of herself. She was strong enough to carry burdens quietly, determined enough to stand firm in what mattered, and gracious enough to make everyone feel valued. She had a social calendar that could rival any celebrity, yet she never tried to impress anyone. She simply lived with faithfulness, kindness, and consistency.
Though our hearts ache in her absence, we hold tightly to the promise she believed in throughout her life, that this goodbye is not forever. We can only imagine Heaven grew sweeter the moment she arrived. She is already filling it with the beautiful music of the organ and piano she loved so dearly, reunited with those she missed, and resting peacefully in the presence of the Savior she loved with all her heart.
“Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord.” Matthew 25:23
