Marie Agnes Unruh passed away July 27, 2025. Marie was born September 30, 1928, to George Henry Hahn and Minerva Harriett (Myers) Hahn of Garfield, Kansas.
Marie was the youngest of nine children — six boys and three girls. The family moved to Garden City, Kansas, in 1941, where Marie graduated from high school in 1946.
Marie met her husband, Lee Unruh, of Ingalls, Kansas, and was married January 20, 1948. To this union were born ten children: Gary Lee, Donald Allen, Harriett Marie, Glen Francis, William Leon, Vernon Laurence, Mildred Josephine, George Edward, Loretta Rose, and Kevin Ray.
Marie’s favorite entertainment was music and dancing. She actually met her husband, Lee, at a dance, which led to love and marriage.
Her family was her pride and joy! Always her happiest times were to see the family together, telling tales of their past, having fun, and watching the children at play.
Marie and Lee moved to First View February 4, 1948, to start their home, going into partnership farming with Lee’s uncle, Clarence, and brother, Waldo. The drought “Filthy Fifties” caused them to leave the farm and move to Cheyenne Wells, where Lee was employed by Harmack Grain Elevator, then later for Cheyenne County Coop. In 1969, they purchased the Sinclair station, operating it until Lee’s death in 1990.
She devoted her time raising the family, and was always at hand for her husband when needed - milking cows, driving tractor, loading and stacking hay, and general “go-fer” and bookkeeper for the station business.
Marie made many quilts, decorated cakes, engraved glassware, oil paintings, composing music and song lyrics, and numerous craft items. She also loved yard work and played her piano or organ for her relaxation. Her caramel rolls were “a must” for the family, along with her many other family favorites, such as chocolate taffy, noodles, bierocks, popcorn balls, and peanut butter pie.
Marie was proceeded in death by her husband, Lee; son, Glen Unruh; daughters, Mildred (Josie) Teubner, and Loretta Rose Benge; grandsons, Eric Unruh and Tom Unruh; and great grandson, Seth Bellamy.
She leaves to mourn son, Gary Unruh (wife Pauline); son, Donald Unruh (wife Linda); daughter, Harriett Warrington (husband Mike); daughter-in-law, Trudy Unruh (son Glen’s wife); son, William Unruh (wife Sherry); son, Vern Unruh (wife Marty); son-in-law, John Teubner (daughter Josie’s husband); son, George Unruh (wife Pam); son-in-law, Steve Benge (daughter Loretta’s husband); son, Kevin Unruh (wife Voneta); 38 grandchildren; 56 great grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; seven step grandchildren; 12 step great grandchildren; and nine step great-great grandchildren.
