Hunting for pronghorn antelope on Fort Carson and the Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site has been suspended because of the federal government shutdown, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) announced Tuesday.

All hunting in Game Management Units 591 (Fort Carson) and 142 (Piñon Canyon) is paused until further notice. The shutdown has affected the start of the pronghorn season, which was set to begin October 4.

Hunters who bought licenses for these areas will get a full refund. They will also keep their preference points, which help them secure future hunting licenses.

To get a refund, hunters must either bring their license to a CPW office in person, or mail in a completed “Application for License Refund” form along with their license. The form and license must be postmarked on or before October 4.

The affected hunt codes printed on licenses are: AM059O1R, AF059O1R, AM142O1R, and AF142O1R.

CPW says other big game hunting seasons may be reviewed later, depending on how long the government shutdown lasts.

For questions, call CPW’s Colorado Springs office at (719) 227-5200 or the Pueblo office at (719) 561-5300.
