Southeast Colorado Fishing Conditions – December 20
Arkansas River Headwaters
The fish have been actively feeding subsurface on midges, though they are also taking caddis larvae and stonefly nymphs. At these low flows, Browns Canyon is easily accessed by wading across the river at Hecla Junction. We are still finding plenty of fish on the feed in pocket water with mid-speed current and good structure, but expect more and more fish to be congregating in the deeper, slower runs known as "winter water". There they can be best tempted by triated midge patterns (black beauties, zebras, etc…), golden stonefly nymphs, and "meat & potatoes" nymphs like pheasant tails, hares ears, and princes. Try to focus fishing efforts on the period of peak sun/warmth from 10 am to 3 pm. (Courtesy of ArkAnglers)
Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area
Trinidad Lake
The lake is currently at 751 surface acres with an elevation of 6186 feet. The surface temperature has been in the low 40 degree range. Anglers have been catching trout along the shoreline using doughbaits and worms. There have been a few reports of perch as well. Ice has started forming in the Reilly Canyon area and along the south shore, but is still very thin.
Just a reminder: the boat ramp is closed as of December 1st.
