Patchy morning fog gives way to sunshine in Cheyenne Wells on Friday, with a chance of evening thunderstorms before a hot, breezy weekend pushes high temperatures toward 100 degrees. The National Weather Service in Goodland, Kan., says fire weather will be a concern this weekend, though recent rain has tempered the threat somewhat.

Friday starts with patchy fog before 9 a.m. near Cheyenne Wells, then becomes sunny with a high near 86. Southeast winds will pick up to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon with gusts to 30 mph. A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms arrives Friday night, mainly before 11 p.m., under mostly cloudy skies with a low around 59.

“Hot, dry and windy over the weekend with fire weather concerns,” a meteorologist with the National Weather Service forecast office in Goodland, Kan., wrote in Thursday's Area Forecast Discussion. The forecaster noted that recent rainfall has caused some green-up that has lowered the overall fire hazard, but cautioned that increased fire danger could still make any fires problematic.

A hot, windy weekend ahead

No red flag warning is in effect for Cheyenne County, but forecasters say southwest winds and drier air over the weekend will raise fire danger as temperatures climb. Saturday will be sunny and breezy with a high near 96 and gusts to 35 mph. Sunday turns hot, with a high near 99 and breezy southwest winds. Grassland fire danger could reach the high to extreme category at times, so residents should use caution outdoors.
