Two people died in a single-vehicle rollover crash on Highway 160 near Bayfield in southwest Colorado, the Colorado State Patrol announced Tuesday. Troopers believe the crash occurred about 6:00 a.m. on Friday, May 1, but the wreck was not discovered until midday Saturday because the vehicle was hidden from the roadway.

Troopers responded at about 12:35 p.m. May 2 to a report of a single-vehicle rollover near milepost 104, just east of Bayfield in La Plata County. They found a blue Chevrolet S10 that had been traveling eastbound on Highway 160 before rolling off the south shoulder and coming to rest on its roof. The vehicle was severely damaged and had rolled an unknown number of times.

The State Patrol identified the driver as 25-year-old Devante Griffin of Farmington, New Mexico, and the passenger as 24-year-old Klariza Tarango, also of Farmington. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

A third occupant, a 5-year-old girl, was taken to an area hospital for treatment and has since been released.

Investigators do not believe impairment or excessive speed were factors in the crash, and no charges are expected. The Colorado State Patrol is the lead investigating agency, and the agency said updated information will be released as the investigation continues.
