(Colorado Newsline) Colorado state Rep. Ruby Dickson will resign from her seat December 11, before the start of what would have been her second year in the Legislature, she announced Friday.

“While I’m proud of our legislative accomplishments, it has recently become clear that the sensationalistic and vitriolic nature of the current political climate is not healthy for me or my family,” the Centennial Democrat wrote in her resignation letter. “Despite this, I am thankful to the many people in the Capitol who have made this past year so productive, illuminating, and often fun. I am confident that we in District 37 will continue to benefit from responsive and visionary leaders in the legislature.”

Dickson was first elected in 2022 to represent House District 37, which includes Greenwood Village and parts of Centennial. The district leans towards Democrats, with Dickson defeating her Republican opponent by 12 percentage points in 2022.

Dickson, a research economist, served during one regular session and during the special session on property taxes before Thanksgiving. She had already filed to run for reelection next year.

Earlier this year, she was a prime sponsor of a bill that eliminated growth caps in Colorado cities. The four other bills she sponsored during the regular session were all signed into law as well. She was also a prime sponsor during the special session on the bill to make Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights refund checks equal next year.

In a statement, House Speaker Julie McCluskie, a Dillon Democrat, called Dickson a “brilliant champion for working families.”

“I know Rep. Dickson will continue to drive positive change in her community and throughout Colorado,” she said.

A vacancy committee made of Democrats in House District 37 will convene in the coming weeks to select Dickson’s replacement. The Legislature reconvenes in January.
