Three people are dead and two are injured after a shooting Saturday afternoon at the Twin Falls In-N-Out, according to a city spokesperson.

Joshua Palmer, Twin Falls’ public information officer, confirmed those numbers, though he said in a text message officials “expect that number to be higher” as the investigation and response continues.

Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks said in a late afternoon press conference that the suspected shooter is dead “nearby on the scene” and that he believes “the threat to the community is over.”

“We are working to try to ascertain his identity and the motivations behind [the shooting] and we’ll be able to figure that out in the next coming days,” Hicks said.

He shared few details, but called it “a very chaotic scene.”

Hicks urged anyone with information about the shooting to reach out to law enforcement.

Several videos posted to social media appear to show a man wearing a black shirt and jeans carrying a large rifle.

One depicts him shooting the front windshield of a parked Tesla, while another shows the man carrying the rifle and walking through the In-N-Out drive-thru.

Twin Falls Police said in a Facebook post that roads in the area, including the Perrine Bridge linking the city with Interstate 84, are closed.

St. Luke’s Health System issued a “critical alert” urging the public to avoid their Magic Valley hospital unless there’s an emergency.

Idaho officials responded in statements and social media posts about the shooting:

Idaho Governor Brad Little, in an X post: “Idahoans, join me in keeping the Twin Falls community in your prayers as law enforcement and first responders respond to an active shooter situation near In-N-Out. Please avoid the area and follow directions from law enforcement as they work to keep everyone safe.”

Idaho Democratic Party chairwoman Lauren Necochea, in an emailed statement: “All of Idaho is grieving after the shooting in Twin Falls. Families are facing losses they never should have had to endure, and a community is struggling to understand how an ordinary day could end in such horror. My heart is with loved ones mourning innocent lives taken, the victims who were injured, and everyone whose sense of safety was shattered. Tragedies like this reveal the worst of what people can do, but also the best of who we can be. I am deeply grateful for the first responders and neighbors who moved toward danger, cared for others, and showed up when they were needed most. In the days ahead, may we carry that same compassion and courage forward and make sure the people of Twin Falls do not face this alone.”

Idaho Republican Party chairwoman Dorothy Moon, in an emailed statement:

“I am grateful that the threat to the community has ended and that there is no longer an ongoing danger to the public. Our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones, those who were injured, and everyone who is anxiously awaiting news about family and friends.

Idaho has always been a place where neighbors look out for one another and families can live in peace. Today’s tragedy is a heartbreaking reminder that senseless acts of violence can touch any community.

I want to express my deepest gratitude to the law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, and other first responders who responded with courage and professionalism under unimaginable circumstances.

I ask all Idahoans to join me in praying for the victims, their families, the people of Twin Falls, and everyone involved in the response and recovery. I urge locals and visitors to obey all directions from law enforcement, avoid the area, and report any suspicious activity immediately. I’m grateful for the swift response of Idaho’s first responders.”

U.S. Senator Jim Risch, R-Idaho, in a social media post: “Vicki and I are monitoring the shooting in Twin Falls. We pray for the safety of all involved and thank the brave first responders on scene.”

U.S. Representative Russ Fulcher, R-Idaho, in a social media post: “My team and I are closely monitoring the situation in Twin Falls.

I am disheartened to learn of the senseless loss of life. Please join me in praying for the victims’ families, the surrounding community, our brave law enforcement officers and first responders on scene, and all those affected by this tragedy.”

U.S. Representative Mike Simpson, R-Idaho, in a social media post: “I am aware of the shooting in the area of In-N-Out in Twin Falls. My team is closely monitoring the situation as more information becomes available from the Twin Falls Police Department.

I am praying for everyone affected and for the brave first responders who are on the scene.”
