
Three small earthquakes in northwest Kansas Saturday

Kansas has experienced six earthquakes in recent days, including three Saturday, according to the United States Geological Survey.
Saturday’s quakes occurred roughly 30 miles northwest of Hayes, Kansas. The first occurred at 2:14 p.m. Central Daylight Time near Bogue, Kansas, and was about six miles below the surface. It measured 2.6 on the Richter Scale.
At 3:51 p.m. a quake about 10 miles away near Hill City, Kansas, measured 2.5 on the Richter Scale, and was about five miles deep. Less than two minutes later, a 2.7 earthquake was recorded about 20 miles away near Collyer, Kansas. That quake was just over six miles deep.

Earthquakes less than 3 on the Richter Scale are often difficult to feel and typically cause little damage. According to the USGS, 16 people reported feeling the first quake, while one person reported feeling the third. As of 4:50 p.m. CDT no one had reported feeling the second quake.
The afternoon June 25, a magnitude 3.4 earthquake was reported near Woodston, Kansas, north of Hayes, roughly 50 miles northeast of Saturday’s quakes. Earlier the same day, a magnitude 2.5 quake was recorded about 50 miles further northeast near the Kansas-Nebraska border.
A magnitude 2.6 earthquake was recorded about 20 miles southeast of Salina, Kansas, June 17.
