About Town – August 28, 2023

What a blessing the "new" Eads Senior Citizen Center building has turned out to be! It is rented out so often for community meetings, wedding and shower parties, 4-H and school events, anniversaries, birthdays, and many more happy happenings. Our director, Gail Voss, is kept so busy making coffee, hosting and sweeping, that I feel sometimes she is overworked, but she is cheerful and eager to help and host. It was the hope of many men and women who had the vision for a larger place for senior citizens to meet and fellowship. Some names that come to mind of people who went to numerous meetings are LaVerle Kelley, Pansy Foxworthy, Sharon Frazee, Virgil and Ida Lessenden, Max and Donna Owens, Loretta Seibel, Delores Rector, Nola Engstrom, Bill and Shirley Krum, June Blooding, Dorothy Frazee, Phil and Madonna Pollreis, Betty Crow, Betty Jacobs, LaVern and Ilene Eder and, no doubt, many others and, of course, our County Commissioner, Donald Oswald.

Randy Paradeis! This nice man maintains the Town of Eads two-story stone office building and Unity Village apartments and grounds. I admire his "smooth" looking grass. Last week he repainted the blue and yellow paint on the curbs and painted the payment box a bright red!

Last Monday afternoon, a number of us met at the senior center to get acquainted with another charming lady doctor who has applied to be a candidate be our full-time doctor at Weisbrod Memorial Hospital. Dr. Saudia Bashir has studied and worked in many different states, and knows that she does not want to practice in her home city, Chicago.

This Saturday, September 2, is Kit Carson Day. It begins with a breakfast at the school, then a rodeo southeast of town in the prairie. Then people come into town to line up behind the community building for their fantastic barbeque lunch. The parade is at 1:30 p.m., followed by two Melodramas.

The Kiowa County Fair begins the following week on Wednesday afternoon, with the rabbit and poultry show at 1:00 p.m., and the Future Farmers of America and 4-H goat show at 6:00 p.m. Thursday and Friday mornings are the favorite events for many people - the Chamber of Commerce Breakfasts. It is free, but donations are appreciated. We do appreciate too the volunteers that cook and serve. Thursday, the members will show swine, beef, or horses and compete in showmanship contests.

The parade down Maine Street and around many blocks brings in many visitors at 10:00 a.m. Saturday. Watch for the 2023 Parade Marshalls: Citizen of the Year - Alice Glover, and Volunteer(s) of the Year - the Kiowa County Fire Protection District, first responders and Director Russ Watson.

A lot of people drive to Eads for the two noon barbeques Friday and Saturday at the fairgrounds. Remember that the beef barbecue is Friday and enjoy the pork barbecue Saturday.

Be sure to check out the exhibits and vendors under the grandstand and in the community building Friday and Saturday. The exhibit hall closes at 6:00 p.m. and, they tell me, they have new fans and improvements there. Saturday will be the big Livestock sale. Besides the PRCA Rodeos there are different types of rodeos every night! The ballgames are away this year, but there is usually a dance and lots of get-to -gathers with friends.

The Trinity Lutheran church family of Kit Carson hosted a back to school ice cream social last week. They welcomed all ages of students and the faculty. Trinity also hosts several "5th Quarter Parties" after some home games and, of course, the annual soup supper October 31 for students and community.

Dwight Lessenden went to the state fair in Pueblo last week to watch his granddaughter, Eve Clark, compete in the state dog show with her dog, Bosco.

Our community wants the thank Konda {McKnight) Howard for her many years as the head cook for the Eads school students and staff. Her service and sweet personality has been so appreciated! This school year, Ginger (Larrew) McPherson has made a career change to return to her first love, food preparation. She will be cooking at the Eads schools with a person she knows and worked with at her former employment at Weisbrod Hospital, Brenda (Ramos) Ramirez and Autumn Rouse

The Eads High school first day of school assembly was especially special for the following high school students who received their school chenille letter or a pin for their letter E to wear on their jackets. These students maintained a grade point average of 3.6 or more for four quarters last year! They are Karsten Buller, Alex Egley, Shaine Winder, Breanna Wilson, Lexi Shotton, Alessandra Paez, Tailee Weeks-Johnson, Kara Wilson, Colin Nelson, Ayden Hough, Stockton Mitchek, Brentley Lening, Case Nelson, Erick Murdock.
