“Hope for the Future begins with faithful fathers.” From Sheridan Lake Bible Church bulletin. Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:16

Maine Street Bash will be Saturday, July 30th!What a week-end that will be !!The Crow-Luther group is planning a terrific night with two bands, Kid’s Zone fun, good food, and visiting. Circle your calendar now for a good old fashioned Saturday night of fun! We pre-sell gate tickets for a discount. Many of us are looking forward to hearing our favorite Kit Carson band, the Rodeo Road Apples and a highly rated band from Denver. Oh, and Darwin Nelson will be having his great Karaoke music in the Plains Theatre for people to join in on the fun of singing. Charlie Vasquez is going to add turkey legs to his menu. Bet some of you will find this a treat.

The Eads Senior Citizens enjoyed a tasty pot luck lunch last Wednesday at noon.

Our tradition is for the guests and people with birthdays or anniversaries of that month get to go through the line first. It was good to have Alice Glover back with us. She has missed several meetings because of having cancer surgeries and treatments. It is a long siege, but she with her supportive daughters and families and is doing better.

This summer, Eads will host the All Kiowa County picnic for senior citizens at the Court House Park Wednesday, July 20th at 6:30 p.m.  West-end families will bring desserts and Eads folk will furnish salads and East-enders will bring any side dish. So circle your calendar for a great evening of food and visiting. The Eads Brunch will be Thursday, July 7th at 10:00 a.m.

Last Wednesday evening, Virgil and Wanda Lessenden hosted the West-End Senior Citizens with a hamburger-cook-out at their ranch.

The “Tree Lady”, Donna Davis, who is the CSU Forester for Southeastern Colorado, was in town last Thursday. Marvin Watson and Larry Wyatt were discussing the health of the tress on Maine Street with her. I joined them for a bit to ask about the beautiful tree by Crow’s Stop and Shop and one by the former Kelly’s Hardware that have lost some bark. She thinks the reason is “environmental” and not “insects”. So maybe that is good news. Forester Davis will inform the public in a future newspaper article. Mrs. Davis remembered that she had visited my home to see my aspen tree. I told her that we had cut it down, but my neighbor, Gerard Bachand, made me several aspen art pieces. She calls them “repurposed” and came to my home that afternoon to take photos of all the wooden treasures I have in my home. One of her projects is to connect wood artists in Colorado like Debbie Klieson’s father, John Krentz, of Cheyenne Wells. Did Readers know that there is a whole room of his excellent and beautiful work on Maine Street? They are for sale.

Dwight and Bonnie Lessenden with their children, Celena and Eli Clark and Tearle hosted a three day Spady family reunion at the country home.

While out and about this week-end, we observed many campers and boats being driven through town. Probably most people were going out to the south lakes or Blue Lake south of Haswell.

A lot of families about town are excited that their children have been selected to play with All-Star Teams, which takes them even into Kansas to some games.

There was a lively time at the Weisbrod ECU Friday where the residents and some staff watched and cheered the staff people who had wheelchair races. The pusher had on a blind fold so that was quite a challenge to follow the verbal directions of the passenger.

The Auxiliary served Root-Beer Floats that is their tradition for many years for Father’s Day. Wendy McDowell, Director of Nurses and Jodi Stolzenberger also coupled this event by serving a buffet of three large party trays of fruits, veggies, meats and cheeses with buns and condiments This was to thank and honor all the nursing staff. There was a very large sign which is now in the dining room to thank the caretakers.

Ryan Trosper was the speaker at the Haswell and Eads United Methodist Churches Sunday. Ryan and Lessa and children live in Swink now where he works for Otero Junior College .He has a heart to fill pastorates when he can. Ryan is the son of Bill and Linda Trosper of Eads.

It is so neat that some older people are “daring” and have “bucket lists” (Things you want or dare to do before you die). Two Eads ladies are in Branson, Missouri, this week to go Zip lining. That will be fun to hear about what that is like .I wonder how many readers over the age of 70 have a “bucket list?”

If people have donations of clothing bedding, or towels for the Haiti mission, they could leave them on my porch at 305 East 13th Street, or call me. Brooke Crawford who works in the Eads Bank this summer has been to the island the last two years and has told her church family how poor the people are there. We are trying to gather items to send in a big metal container from Holyoke Colorado. This will be sent by the Orphan Grain Train Mission.

Ronald and Shirley (Mays) White of Kit Carson went to visit Jenness (Klieboeker) and husband, Gary Richardson in Loveland. Jenness is formerly of Kit Cason. She is afflicted with the ALS disease.

During the winter, I lamented about our housing situation in Eads. The good news, there is beginning to be a turn around. Recently at least three or more houses that have been vacant a long time were sold. Also more people are buying lots out at the Kiowa Estates.

Sunday we noticed that the wooden basic structure of the new Love Store building is being erected. It is surprising to see all the land that has been cleared for the parking lot.

Another positive sight is to see more people buying gas at the new Co-op Store site and Contractors are going in out of the building.

We are looking for models for fashion shows at Weisbrod ECU on Friday, June 24th and at the Prairie Pines on Friday July 17th.If possible, please call Doris at 439-5665 so we can plan the spacing of models of any age. Both shows are at 2:00 p.m.

The Town of Eads Life Guards are busy each afternoon caring for the swimmers. We are glad we have a swimming pool in our town

Most every afternoon one can see bicyclists setting up their tents in the parks. Some explore the town and always head for Crow’s grocery store. They sometimes go into the Davis’ HealthMart and they stop at the C-Store too. Others find the Cinnamon Joes’ Pizza and J J’s Ranch House. Bud Bennett says many of them stop by to ask about the five flags he flies daily and many wonder where to find the Museum.

Craig Bronson of Sheridan Lake brought over a large painting of the Kiowa County Museum that he finished last week to present it to the Museum volunteer on Friday.
