“Always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else.” 1 Thessalonians 5:15
Plainview School offered a nice service to parents and students last Thursday as school began. Some BOCES staff were on hand to visit with families as well as parent resources were available. The Lyons Club was on hand for eye checks, which can be a real savings to families.
Congratulations to Marie (Nelson) Watts, who has served many patrons of the GN Bank in Eads for 20 years. She was recognized by the bank officials in a photo ad in one of our two Kiowa County newspapers. Before she began her banking career, she was a very competent and popular babysitter for many children in our community. I remember that, when some of my homemaking students did job interviews in her home, they wrote and told us many interesting facts about what Marie had shared with them in being a childcare worker and parent.
Happy 90th birthday to Betty (Kelley) Crow of Eads. She served this community and county in so many ways, including as a mother of four fine children, Kim, Tammy, Charla, and David (deceased). Her brother, Gary Kelley, came from South Fork. He is still as jovial as in the past. Her sister and brother-in-law, Bobbi and Bill Calhoun, who live deep in Oklahoma, were unable to come for the celebration. However, there were many friends and more relatives here to greet Betty and visit with others. They enjoyed cakes and mints made by Kristina Wolf of Haswell. Betty, who is in the Weisbrod Health facility for a long stay since having a painful fall in her home. She is grateful for so many family members and friends who have come to visit her. Just this Wednesday afternoon, Loy Jones of Colorado Springs has been here, as well as Sandy Kelley. It was so good to see Sandy, my dear country neighbor, again to visit and remind each other that we loved each other and treasure our memories of living west of Eads and her and Harvey’s children.
If readers are near Kit Carson, let me remind you that they have a lovely café opened in the east side of town. Also, they are so thankful to have a grocery store on the corner of Main Street and Highway 287.
Kit Carson residents will be hosting their Kit Carson Day festivities August 30. There is usually a rodeo in the morning, vendor sales and exhibits near the community building, and a wonderful barbeque followed by a parade and games, and a dance later in the evening.
About a week ago, several Kit Carson ladies and relatives flew to one the Carolinas for a big Mary Kay convention. From some Facebook photos, I remember Dara Randel, Tracey Weeks, and Sara Crawford of Kit Carson, Tieler Randel of Manhattan, Kansas, and Jordyn Weeks of Alamosa, who told me that they had a great time.
Wednesday noon was fun for the residents of Weisbrod Health when Brenda Leon, Linda Hopkins, and Marla Darnell brought all the “fillings” for delicious sandwiches for lunch from the Love’s store just north of Eads. There was enough for the other staff, including the office and laundry staff, most of whom wore purple and gold because it was the first day back to school. Then, in the afternoon, we had a choice of three flavors of ice cream made by Robin Boyher, and purple or gold cup cakes. What a treat!
The weekly Kiowa County Press came this week in the mail Wednesday morning with a pretty blue-sky photo of a small crop-dusting plane in the sky above a Kiowa County field. Are you eager every week to see what photo Chris Sorensen will take in or over Kiowa County to print on the cover of the 138-year-old Press?
Phyllis Griswould returned from Arizona via Oklahoma where her son, Greg, drove her to visit. Now we are visiting with her in Colorado.
I am pleased to see the informative articles and photos of the winners in the Kiowa County Press with the results of judging projects at 4-H Achievement Day. Extension Agent Tearle Lessenden said the pretty girl presenting the champion award ribbons was Hailey Trosper in the three photos. He is already working at the State Fair in Pueblo as Superintendent of a division of 4-H projects.
There has been more rain here and in Cheyenne County. Last Sunday south of Kit Carson, just past the gas plant, I saw a huge pond of water in a field that Barry Koch farmed last year.
We had a productive Hospital Auxiliary meeting Tuesday. Activity Director Brenda Leon explained some of the current plans and needs. The group approved buying a manicure table-cart, which is so needed and desired by the ladies and men. We welcomed Sarah Siebel, who came to learn about what the Auxiliary does, and she offered to help. We discussed the November 22 Hospital Auxiliary Bazaar, and details of what we will do. We are just so thankful to Linda Trosper for her 40 or more years of organizing the annual Bazaar, and that she has stayed at the leadership helm all these years.
Thank you, Lord, for the blessings of living in southeast Colorado.
