“People look at the outside appearance, but the Lord Looks at the heart.” 1 SAMUEL 16:7

Last Tuesday started off with a bang in “Eads Eagle country” when our volleyball team went to play Hugo. The night before, the girls who also play on the softball team played in Guyman, Oklahoma. Thursday, the junior and senior volleyball teams played against Arickaree, and then Friday with Kim. Both games were in Eads.

The Oswald families hosted their traditional end-of-summer oyster fry and potluck supper on the west side of Main Street in Kit Carson between their business properties. By the appearance of the outdoor furniture and tables, it was a big affair. They usually have live music and lots of good food and visiting that the farmers’ and ranchers’ families to enjoy.

We had a large number of students and families come to our annual ice cream social at the Kit Carson Lutheran Church in August. I enjoyed watching Monty and Tracey Weeks, Betsy Evans, Rod and Judy Houser, Sara Crawford, and Pastor Barton blow up lots of balloons and cover the tables with a variety of colorful tablecloths. The school staff seemed pleased with their money gift that the church gave them to spend at Katie Johnson’s new grocery store on Highway 287.

We had such a good time on “Patient Appreciation Day” with a “walk and roll” around town. I like to roll by Neil and Connie Richardson’s home to study the art on their totem pole that a man carved. In the afternoon we played Bingo, had refreshments, and then some Hospital Auxiliary ladies - Alice Glover, Mary Engelhardt, Loretta Seibel, and Diana Flory - came to help Jaton and Don Wallace teach us to play some casino games. We all learned somewhat, except Don, who is a native of Las Vegas.

Wanda (Ball) Lessenden had a phone call recently inviting her and all her children and her brother’s children to come to the Hanover Community outdoor celebration near the school. Fifty years ago, historians relate that Wanda’s father was a part of a group who originated the fire department, which is certainly needed on those dry prairies east of Colorado Springs. Wanda and Virgil and several of their children, and children of her deceased brothers, Everitt and Curtis, attended the celebration.

The movie in Eads September 9-11 is “It Ends With Us” is reported to be really superb, according to my friends. If you haven’t attended the movies, try Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in Eads.

We enjoyed little Lexi Ellis delicious, moist homemade cake decorated with soft lavender roses from the 4-H auction. When it was being sold, Extension Agent Tearle Lessenden stated that it was made from her great grandmother, Phyllis Nelson’s, recipe. Tearle said he remembered the cake recipe in the 4-H Cook Book. When her mother brought her over to say “thank you for buying my cake,” I was impressed with Terri’s good mothering. Pretty little Lexi is only “four fingers old.”

I have been sharing the wonderful jars of jam made by Clayton Nelson that I bought at the 4-H auction, which are so tasty. This young man looks to be about six foot and three inches tall. He is a student at Karvel and is a sports player for Hugo-Genoa School co-op. A percent of the money earned in the 4-H auction, goes to the 4-H baker or cook, and the remainder of the earrings goes into the 4-H scholarship fund.

The Eads girls who play volleyball for the Eagle team are Jordynn Turcotte, Kara Wilson, Anna Wollert, Bailey Sierra, Gianna Gibbs, Tailee Weeks-Johnson, Aspen Nelson, Hailee Trosper, Peyton Eder, Addison Courkamp, Alessandra Paez, Mia Crow, and Lacie Kraft.

Congratulations to the Honorable Pamela E. Johnston, whose swearing-in ceremony to be our county judge will held September 3 at the Kiowa County courthouse in Eads. She is a lady of the Arlington-Haswell community. She follows an esteemed lawyer-judge, Gary Davis, who recently retired.

Eagle fans watched the first home football game August 28 against Arickaree, and can watch them meet up with Miami-Yoder September 6 in Eads. The names of Eagle players are Stockton Mitchek, Case Nelson, Shaine Winder, Johnny Vasquez, Gabe Hadley-Valdez, Karston Buller, Kaiden Dunlap, Jason Bletzacker, Adyn Hough, Spencer Uhland, Kai Brown, Gaige Rittgers, Weston Mitchek, and Alyxx Eglery.

The Eads golf team has travelled to many meets this summer. Coach Justin McLoud’s golfers are Karsten Buller, Adyn Hough, Jayson Bletzacker, and Gaige Rittgers of Eads, and Kit Carson senior Brenden Framel. Former Eads student Arron Musgrave from McClave school also competes on the Eads team.

Isn’t it wonderful that in these days that students can pursue the sport they excel in the most? Plus, if the family can afford for them to travel, to train with a nearby school, or a different sport offered in their school?

The Eads School also has a Track Team of Jaden Self, Colin Nelson, and Conner Lynch,

Last week, I typed the names of the Kit Carson football team. I am acquainted with the KC volleyball team girls who are Tressie Golding, Avery Johnson, Shay Rady, Addy Ramirez, Braylin Jackson, Ashlee Koch, August Weber, Kyra Gaynor, Alyssa Gekler, and Skylar Watson.

We have a great fair, exhibits, several rodeos, parade, two breakfasts and two barbeques and more September 8-14.
