The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is reviewing an officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday near a residential home where explosive devices were later discovered.
Just after 6:00 p.m. in the 1400 block of Chestnut Street, Fremont County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a welfare check at a Cañon City residence. A deputy encountered a barricade situation involving a 27-year-old man who was armed with a firearm. During the encounter, the deputy shot the subject, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is hospitalized. The deputy, who was not injured in the gunfire, later experienced a medical event and was treated at another local hospital before being released.
Neither the suspect or deputy have been identified.
CBI agents arrived after the incident to investigate and found four plastic items and one metal object inside the home that appeared to be explosive devices. A bomb squad from Pueblo Metro confirmed the devices were inert but removed them for safety.
The deputy involved was wearing a body camera, and its footage will be part of the investigation. Once released from the hospital, the man is expected to face charges including first-degree assault, menacing, and prohibited use of a weapon.
The CBI’s investigation of the incident continues.
