Cheyenne Wells and the rest of Cheyenne County face a hot, mostly sunny Labor Day weekend, with highs in the low to mid-90s each day and the best rain chance arriving Saturday night.

Friday is mostly sunny in Cheyenne Wells with a high near 96 and a south wind of 10 to 15 mph. A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms develops between 7 p.m. and midnight, with a 20 percent chance of precipitation, mostly cloudy skies and a low around 66.

“Well above normal temperatures continue through the weekend,” a meteorologist with the National Weather Service forecast office in Goodland, Kan., wrote in Friday’s Area Forecast Discussion, adding that afternoon and evening thunderstorms are possible through the start of next week and that “best chances will be Saturday night.”

Limited severe threat, no warnings in effect

The Goodland forecast office listed no watches, warnings or advisories in effect Friday morning for its Colorado, Kansas or Nebraska zones. No Red Flag Warning was in effect for Cheyenne County.

Forecasters described a limited severe weather threat through the weekend, with heavy rain, cloud-to-ground lightning and isolated strong wind gusts the primary concerns. Wind shear is expected to stay weak beneath the ridge of high pressure, keeping any storm threat focused on strong downdraft winds rather than organized severe weather.
