College Goal Sunday to be held in November

Each year, Lamar Community College serves as a host site for College Goal Sunday.  Traditionally offered in February, this year’s event will be held in November to correspond with the 2017-18 FAFSA opening date of October 1.

College Goal Sunday will be held on November 13, 2016, from 1:00-3:00pm in the LCC Betz Technology Center, Room 231.

College Goal Sunday is a statewide initiative to assist potential students in filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  The FAFSA is a federal requirement for all students who plan to receive grants, scholarships, student loans or work-study funds to assist in paying for college.  At the College Goal Sunday event, students and parents are given help in filling out the FAFSA – free of charge.

“The FAFSA has two significant changes this year,” said LCC Financial Aid Director Teale Hemphill.  “There’s a new opening date of October 1st and it now requests tax and income information from two years prior.”

“We are happy to host the College Goal Sunday event to help parents and students complete the FAFSA filing process and take the first step in funding their college education.”

In addition to this service, the college will be offering one $1000 scholarship to a student who attends this event and then attends LCC in the Fall 2017 semester.  The names of attendees who fill out their FAFSA at LCC on November 13 will be entered into a drawing and the winner will be selected at random.

Any and all current and upcoming college students in the area are invited and encouraged to attend College Goal Sunday at LCC, no matter where they plan to attend college.

Student and parents should bring the following information with them to the event:

  •         Social Security number
  •         State Issued ID, such as a driver’s license
  •         2015 W-2 Forms and other records of money earned
  •         2015 untaxed income records: Social Security, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, welfare, or veterans benefits
  •         2015 bank statements
  •         2015 business and investment mortgage information, business and farm records, stock, bond, and other investment records
  •         Alien registration card (if not a U.S. citizen)
  •         Parents’ income and bank records, SSNs, birthdates, marital status and date of that status

Financial aid counselors can help all attendees get started on the FAFSA, even without all of the necessary paperwork.  A Spanish-speaking interpreter will be available during the event.
