Consumers tuning out most food safety warnings, report finds
Pennsylvania families are being urged to check their kitchens as food recalls continue nationwide.
Recent alerts involve shortbread cookies, fruit bars, peanut butter and deli meat but some consumers may not be aware there was ever an issue. The country has seen 130 FDA and 32 USDA-issued product alerts this year, according to the report “Food for Thought 2026."
Teresa Murray, consumer watchdog director for the Public Interest Research Group Education Fund, said repeated warnings can lead to recall fatigue, causing people to tune out food safety alerts.
“There can be this feeling that there's just nothing safe out there, and that's not a good place to be. We all have to eat," Murray stressed. "You can't constantly think that there's some kind of bacteria boogeyman living in your refrigerator or in your pantry.”

Food contamination alerts still grab headlines, especially if they are attached to a well-known or recognizable brand or if the warnings result in mass illnesses, Murray explains. A leading example is the cyclospora outbreak this summer. Murray added some consumers may take recalls more seriously if they affect products they frequently buy. According to the Fresh Recall website, more than 100 products are on the recall list in Pennsylvania.
Some experts and lawmakers argued federal funding cuts have impacted food safety programs and put Americans at further risk of foodborne illness. Food safety accountability could be channeled in several directions and examining the food supply chain is one place to start, Murray argued.
“Are some of these companies taking the steps that they should be taking to make sure that the products that they're selling to others downstream are safe? Clearly, not enough is being done because otherwise we wouldn't have all this stuff,” Murray contended.
Health officials' latest warning involves fresh dips, salsas and guacamole with jalapeño peppers as an ingredient over concerns of salmonella or listeria contamination. A consumer advisory warned not to eat, sell, or serve the products.
