The Costilla County sheriff, undersheriff, and several deputies in southern Colorado’s San Luis Valley have been indicted on multiple criminal charges following an investigation by the 12th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
A grand jury issued the indictments Thursday, charging Sheriff Danny Sanchez, Undersheriff Cruz Soto and other members of the Costilla County Sheriff’s Office with offenses including official misconduct, assault, abuse of a corpse and failure to intervene.
Sheriff Danny Sanchez and former Deputy Keith Schultz were each indicted on five counts of official misconduct and one count of abuse of a corpse related to their handling of the discovery of unidentified human remains in the Wild Horse Mesa area of Costilla County.
Undersheriff Cruz Soto faces two counts of failure to intervene and one count of third-degree assault stemming from an incident involving the use of force on a Costilla County resident experiencing a mental health crisis.
Sergeant Caleb Sanchez, the sheriff’s son, was also indicted on charges of second- and third-degree assault related to the same incident.
The indictments follow what prosecutors described as an extensive investigation into reports of misconduct within the Costilla County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation remains ongoing.
District Attorney Anne Kelly said the case reflects a commitment to accountability.
“Our community expects our law enforcement officers to perform their duties with integrity and adherence to the law,” Kelly said. “Restoring and maintaining public trust must always start with accountability.”
