Matthew Muniz Jr. was arrested Wednesday at approximately 3:00 p.m. in La Junta, Colorado, after a five-and-a-half-hour standoff following his flight from the Otero County courthouse earlier that morning.
Muniz Jr., 29, fled the courthouse around 8:30 a.m. when an Otero County Sheriff's deputy was about to arrest him on an outstanding Pueblo County warrant for multiple charges including Felony Stalking and Domestic Violence. He had been at the courthouse for a scheduled appearance, while free on bond, on separate Otero County charges of Felony Eluding, Possession of a Dangerous Weapon, and Possession of a Prohibited Large Capacity Magazine.
Muniz Jr. ran to his apartment across the street from the courthouse and refused orders to surrender. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation Special Response Team, the Colorado State Patrol, the La Junta Police Department, and the Rocky Ford Police Department were deployed around 9:30 a.m. to the 200 block of Santa Fe Avenue. Muniz Jr. was taken into custody without further incident following the standoff.
The Pueblo County warrants had been issued May 19. Muniz Jr. is likely to face additional charges based on the events of May 27.
