When planning your next summer adventure, look no further than Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Spanning over 30,000 acres, this gorgeous park has no shortage of stunning views and exciting activities. One of the most beautiful national parks in Colorado, it’s the perfect destination for your family’s next road trip.

Hiking

There are seven different hiking trails along the north and south rims of the canyon. These trails vary in difficulty and length, so you can enjoy a beautiful hike regardless of your skill level. Hiking is also available in the inner canyon, though there are no marked trails there. Park officials recommend that only skilled hikers trek into the inner canyon, as the terrain can become extremely steep and the hike is quite strenuous.

Fishing

The river at the heart of Black Canyon has been designated as Gold Metal Water by the Colorado Wildlife Commission, making it the perfect place to set up your fishing pole. The Gunnison River is a perfect place to fish for rainbow trout and is easily accessible from the East Portal Road. If you’re looking for a quieter spot to fish, you can hike into the inner canyon to find more secluded locations.

Kayaking

For a more heart-pounding activity, experienced kayakers can challenge the roaring rapids of the Gunnison River. The river boasts Class V rapids that can be challenging for even the most expert kayakers. Park officials urge kayakers to be aware of the dangers of this roaring river, requiring a wilderness use permit for all kayakers.

Wildlife Watching

Home to a wide array of wildlife, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is the perfect place for amateur and professional photographers to get some great shots. To increase your chances of spotting the park’s animals, rangers suggest bringing binoculars and wearing clothes that will blend in with the environment. Many of the park’s inhabitants, such as the mule deer and yellow-bellied marmots, are harmless and quite skittish. Other wild animals, such as mountain lions, bobcats, and black bears, are not as friendly and should only be viewed from a safe distance.

Special Events and Programs

Visitors looking to learn a bit more about the park will love its variety of special events and programs. Each morning, park rangers host a geology walk, hiking half a mile on the Rim Rock Trail and providing information about the creation of Black Canyon and its unique rocks. Guests can also join rangers for afternoon or evening discussions on a variety of topics relating to the park. On Wednesdays and Fridays, you can end the evening under the stars at the Night Sky Viewing event. The park also hosts an annual Astronomy Festival in late June.
