A cold front that moved through Prowers County Thursday left temperatures well below seasonal normals Friday, but the cooler air will be short-lived. Forecasters expect a rapid rebound to the low 80s Saturday and near 90 degrees by Sunday, making for one of the warmest late-March weekends on record for the area. A Fire Weather Watch is in effect for Prowers County for Saturday afternoon, with gusty south winds and low humidity expected alongside the warming temperatures.

Friday will begin cloudy before clearing through the afternoon, with a high near 55 degrees. North-northeast winds of 10 to 15 mph will weaken and shift to the southeast by afternoon. Friday night will be partly cloudy with a low near 33 degrees and south-southeast winds of 10 to 15 mph.

“Strong cold front moves through the plains late this afternoon/tonight, bringing significantly cooler temperatures and a few light rain/snow showers overnight into Friday,” Eric Petersen, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo, wrote in Thursday’s Area Forecast Discussion. Petersen noted the cooler air will be replaced quickly, with temperatures recovering well above normal by the weekend.

Saturday: Fire weather watch in effect, high near 82

Saturday will be sunny with a high near 82 degrees. South winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts as high as 35 mph are expected through the day. A Fire Weather Watch is in effect for Prowers County from noon to 7 p.m. MDT Saturday, issued by the National Weather Service in Pueblo. The watch covers a broad portion of southeastern Colorado, with forecasters citing warm temperatures, critically low humidity and gusty south winds as the primary conditions driving elevated fire danger. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning through at least Saturday evening.

Saturday night will be mostly clear with a low near 42 degrees. South winds of 10 to 15 mph will become westerly after midnight.

Sunday through Tuesday: Continued warmth before gradual easing

Sunday will be sunny with a high near 90 degrees and light west winds around 10 mph — potentially challenging daily temperature records for late March in the Lamar area. Overnight will be partly cloudy with a low near 44 degrees.

Monday will be partly sunny with a high near 88 degrees and west winds of 5 to 15 mph, remaining well above normal. A low near 44 degrees is expected Monday night as clouds increase.

Tuesday will be partly sunny with a high near 81 degrees, with breezy west winds of 15 to 20 mph and gusts up to 30 mph.

Extended outlook: Gradual cooling, active pattern developing

Temperatures will ease gradually through the middle of next week as a more active weather pattern develops across the region. The National Weather Service in Pueblo said shower and thunderstorm chances are expected to increase, primarily over the mountains initially, before spreading to lower elevations. The Climate Prediction Center has forecast above-normal precipitation chances for the broader region. Residents should monitor updated forecasts at weather.gov as the weather pattern evolves through next week.
