Governor Polis appoints Matthew G. Margeson to the 7th Judicial District
Colorado Governor Jared Polis has appointed Matthew G. Margeson to the 7th Judicial District, filling a new judgeship created by Senate Bill 25-024. The appointment is effective July 1, 2026.
Margeson currently serves as a Magistrate Judge for the Court of Indian Offenses for the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, a role he has held since 2023, where his docket consists of criminal and domestic matters. Since 2024, he has also served as a Municipal Court Judge for the City of Durango, hearing municipal cases.
Previously, Margeson was a County Court Supervisor for the 6th Judicial District Attorney's Office in 2023 and a Dolores County Court Judge in the 22nd Judicial District from 2023 to 2024. In the 22nd Judicial District Attorney's Office, he served as elected District Attorney from 2021 to 2023, Assistant District Attorney from 2017 to 2021, and Deputy District Attorney from 2014 to 2017. Earlier in his career, he was a partner at Margeson & Reed, LLC from 2007 to 2014.
Margeson received his B.S. from the University of Michigan in 2004 and his J.D. from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law in 2007.
Colorado’s 7th Judicial District includes Gunnison, Delta, Montrose, San Miguel, Ouray, and Hinsdale counties.
