Eads and western Kiowa County face a hot, breezy start to the week, with sunny skies and highs near 98 through Tuesday before a slow buildup of moisture brings rising thunderstorm chances by midweek. The National Weather Service in Pueblo expects afternoon and evening storm coverage to increase through Wednesday, followed by a cooler, wetter stretch late in the week.

Monday is sunny and breezy, with a high near 98. A south-southeast wind of 5 to 10 mph increases to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon, with gusts as high as 35 mph. Skies stay mostly clear Monday night with a low around 63 and a breezy southeast wind near 20 mph.

A meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Sunday's Area Forecast Discussion that "a slow increase in available moisture brings an increase in daily shower and thunderstorm coverage through the middle of the week," with the warmest, driest conditions returning for the weekend.

Storm chances climb through midweek

Rain chances remain low through Tuesday but increase Tuesday night, when forecasters place a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight. By Wednesday night the chance rises to 50 percent, and showers become likely on Thursday. Forecasters say the storms will tend to be slow-moving and "pop and drop" in nature, with gusty winds and lightning the main threats, and note that any heavy downpour over a recent burn area could raise a localized flash flood concern. No fire weather warnings are in effect for Kiowa County; the heightened fire concern from dry storms is tied mainly to the higher terrain to the west.

Tuesday and Wednesday

Tuesday is sunny and breezy again, with a high near 98 and a south-southeast wind of 20 to 25 mph gusting to 35 mph. Wednesday stays sunny with a high near 97 as winds turn lighter out of the west, then east in the afternoon. Overnight lows hold in the low 60s.

Extended outlook: Thursday and Friday

Showers are likely Thursday afternoon with a high near 93, and a 50 percent chance of storms continues Thursday night. Friday turns a bit cooler and mostly sunny with a high near 90 and only a slight chance of an afternoon storm. Beyond the week, forecasters expect a much warmer and drier pattern to build back over the region as high pressure strengthens, pushing temperatures well above normal.

Motorists and outdoor workers should be prepared for strong afternoon wind gusts early in the week and brief, locally heavy downpours with any midweek storm.
