Lamar will see sunny skies and well-above-normal heat through the weekend, with highs in the mid to upper 90s Friday rising to between 96 and 100 degrees Sunday, while gusty winds Saturday and building fire-weather concerns mark the days ahead in Prowers County.

Friday is sunny and hot in the Lamar area, with highs in the mid to upper 90s and southwest winds around 10 mph shifting to the southeast in the afternoon. Clouds move in Friday evening before skies become partly cloudy after midnight, with lows near 60 and south winds of 10 to 15 mph.

The National Weather Service in Pueblo said temperatures across the Lower Arkansas River Valley will peak Sunday. “Extended NBM data shows temperatures of greater than 95 degrees are likely for the Lower Arkansas River Valley, with some more extreme model outcomes showing temps closer to 100F for the eastern portions of the valley,” forecasters wrote in Friday’s Area Forecast Discussion.

Heat and rising fire danger

A strengthening upper-level ridge will drive the warm-up, and a hot, dry and increasingly windy pattern is expected to take hold early next week. Forecasters said the combination of stronger winds, low humidity and curing fuels means “critical fire weather conditions are expected to become more and more likely from Sunday through the middle next week.”

Although Prowers County is not under a fire weather watch, the weather service noted humidity could fall into the single digits in the driest locations. Saturday’s southeast winds gusting to around 35 mph will be the first sign of the breezier pattern.

Saturday and Sunday

Saturday is mostly sunny with highs of 90 to 95 degrees and southeast winds of 10 to 20 mph gusting to around 35 mph; the breeze continues Saturday night with lows in the upper 50s. Sunday turns sunny and hot, with highs of 96 to 100 degrees and south winds of 10 to 20 mph.

Extended outlook

The heat intensifies into next week. Monday stays sunny with highs in the mid to upper 90s, and Tuesday is hotter still, with highs of 100 to 104 degrees. Windy conditions arrive Tuesday night, and forecasters expect the hot, dry and windy regime — and the accompanying fire danger — to continue through midweek.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and take care with anything that could spark a fire, especially during the hot, windy afternoons expected from Sunday onward.
