Hot with daily thunderstorm chances for Eads, Kiowa County
Eads and western Kiowa County face a warm, unsettled stretch through the end of the week, with a daily round of afternoon and evening thunderstorms riding along on the heels of near-100-degree heat. Wednesday brings mostly sunny skies and a high near 98 before a slight chance of showers and storms arrives late in the day. Thunderstorm chances climb Thursday and linger into Friday before hot, drier weather returns for the weekend.
Forecasters are watching the far eastern plains, including Kiowa County, for a chance of a few strong to severe storms Thursday afternoon and evening.
Wednesday starts sunny and hot, with a high near 98 in Eads. A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms develops after 4 p.m. Winds will be light, out of the west-southwest at 5 to 10 mph and turning to the northeast by afternoon. The overnight low settles near 61, with a 30 percent chance of storms before 7 p.m.
The National Weather Service in Pueblo is calling for a daily round of storms into the weekend. "Daily shot of showers and thunderstorms through Friday, initially forming over the mts by midday then spreading across the plains," a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Tuesday's Area Forecast Discussion. The office added that a severe weather threat develops for the far eastern plains on Thursday.

Thursday and Friday
Thursday turns a bit cooler behind the daily storms, with a high near 93 under mostly sunny skies and a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Showers become likely Thursday night, with a low around 57 and precipitation chances near 80 percent.
Friday stays sunny with a high near 89 and a 20 percent chance of afternoon and evening storms. Storm chances rise to about 40 percent Friday night before tapering off, with a low near 57.
Extended outlook
Hot and dry weather returns for the weekend as upper-level high pressure builds over the region. Saturday and Sunday both bring sunny skies and highs near 93, with overnight lows in the low 60s. Rain chances all but disappear through the start of next week.
Severe storms possible Thursday
The main weather story this week is Thursday's storm threat. A stronger upper-level disturbance crosses the state, and the Storm Prediction Center has much of the eastern plains under a marginal to slight risk for severe weather. Forecasters say damaging wind gusts and large hail are the primary concerns for the far eastern plains, including Kiowa County. Storm chances Thursday run as high as 50 percent, with additional showers likely Thursday night.
No red flag warnings or fire-weather headlines are in effect for Kiowa County. A flash flood watch has been issued, but it covers the Aspen Acres burn scar in the mountains to the west, not the plains.
Residents should keep an eye on the sky Thursday afternoon and evening and be ready to move indoors quickly if storms turn severe. With highs near 100 early in the week, drink plenty of water and limit strenuous outdoor activity during the heat of the day.
