Eads and western Kiowa County face a hot, dry and gusty stretch of weather to start the week, with sunny skies, afternoon highs in the mid- to upper 90s and breezy southwest winds prevailing Monday through Wednesday. The National Weather Service expects high fire danger to persist across the region throughout the work week.

Monday will be sunny and breezy, with a high near 98 and patchy smoke possible through the late morning. Southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph are expected, with gusts as high as 35 mph. Skies turn mostly clear Monday night as the low drops to around 60 and winds shift to the north-northwest after midnight.

"Hot, dry and windy conditions will prevail through Friday across southern Colorado with continued high fire danger," a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Sunday's Area Forecast Discussion. Forecasters noted that areas east of Interstate 25 that saw recent heavy rainfall are not under formal fire weather highlights, but cautioned that not everyone received rain and that residents planning outdoor burning should use extreme caution.

Heat and fire danger dominate the outlook

No Red Flag Warning is in effect for Kiowa County, with the Pueblo office's active warnings centered on the southern mountains and the Interstate 25 corridor. Even so, the broader pattern of low humidity, gusty winds and hot temperatures keeps fire danger elevated across the eastern plains. The Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch for much of southern Colorado for Tuesday, though the far eastern counties are excluded. Residents are urged to avoid activities that could spark a grass fire during the heat of the afternoon.

Tuesday and Wednesday

Tuesday will be sunny with a high near 95 and breezy conditions, as north winds give way to south-southeast winds of 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon and gusts near 30 mph. Tuesday night turns windy, with a low around 61 and south-southeast gusts as high as 45 mph. Wednesday brings more sun and a high near 96, with west-southwest winds becoming south-southeast in the afternoon and gusts to 30 mph.

Extended outlook: Thursday and Friday

The hot, dry pattern continues into the latter half of the week. Thursday will be sunny with a high near 99, followed by a Friday high near 102 as the heat intensifies. Breezy south to southwest winds persist, with overnight gusts of 35 to 40 mph possible. Pueblo forecasters say dangerous fire weather conditions are expected across southern Colorado on both days due to gusty winds and very low humidity, with a possible pattern change easing the danger by next weekend.

With high heat building through the week, residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit time outdoors during the hottest part of the day and check on elderly neighbors and those without air conditioning.
